Animals at Gorod Cobak shelter, OIPA’s member league in Mykolaiv, Ukraine, need help. One of its volunteer Yuliya, asked us for food and for medicines and, in the past weeks, we bought 340 kg of dog’s food. Now Yuliya has told us the story of Jack, a dog with heart disease. We could not remain indifferent and we bought more than 300 euros worth of medicine.

help Ukraine OIPA

Jack is a old dog that needs a pills indicated for the treatment of heart failure for life. This medicine is very expensive and the shelter is unable to buy it, but Jack cannot live without it. “We took him off the street with a punctured lung, cured him and then it turned out that he had heartworms in his heart. We cured them too, but now Cardisure is support until the end of his days” says Yuliya.

The Gorod Cobak’s volunteers are very loving. They take care of each of the 200 dogs that live there, trying to cope with huge expenses, both for food and veterinary care. Only for Jack, regular checkups and medication are essential to his survival. When we found out, we couldn’t help but help him.

OIPA International ordered pills worth more than €300, as well as three bags of food, to give as a small gift to the other dogs who live with him.

Jack will have to take this medicine for the rest of his life. If you can, please help us with a small donation.

Kyiv Society for the Protection of Animals (KSPA) “Lucky Strand” is an Ukrainian animal welfare association and a OIPA’s member league. In recent months, it has been working diligently to care for its own animals and those at the Temporary Animal Shelter at VDNG in Kyiv. There was a significant amount of work to be completed, and the results have exceeded their expectations.

Support for the Temporary Shelter at VDNG

KSPA “Lucky Strand” team has worked at the Temporary Animal Shelter at VDNG in Kyiv, “One of our greatest challenges and at the same time one of our most significant achievements” says Alyona Zatsarynna, president of the association.

Since the end of March 2022, for four months, KSPA “Lucky Strand”‘s team was the first and only animal welfare organization that took part in establishing the Temporary Shelter for animals. They closely cooperated with the city authorities and carried out all shelter duties, including:

  • organizing a team of more than 70 volunteers;
  • providing twice-daily dog walking and feeding;
  • ensuring regular cleaning;
  • helping with the socialization of unapproachable animals;
  • assisting veterinarians during treatments and procedures;
  • organizing the receipt of humanitarian aid for the shelter

KSPA “Lucky Strand”‘s volunteers involvement at the shelter continued even after municipal staff were hired – until 2025. They assisted with dog walking, promoted animals on social media and information platforms, and supported their adoption.

Support for Municipal Veterinary Clinics

In the meanwhile, KSPA “Lucky Strand” focused on their own foster animals, who are kept in paid boarding facilities, ensuring their medical care, food, and rehoming and, beyond the VDNG shelter, they regularly visited municipal veterinary clinics in Kyiv. We photographed and walked the animals there to increase their chances of adoption. This significantly accelerated rehoming for many animals outside the VDNG shelter.

“We are proud to have been the first to take full responsibility for the animals’ care at the shelter and to have contributed to providing proper conditions and helping so many dogs and cats find loving families” says Alyona Zatsarynna.

Animals at Gorod Cobak shelter in Mykolaiv, Ukraine, need food. Last week one of its volunteer, Yuliya, asked us for help. Its guests are about 200 dogs and feeding them all every day is a very difficult challenge. Thanks to the last month donations, about 500 euros, we’ve delivered 200 kg of food. Now, we’ve collected other 200 euros. Thanks to the fundraiser “Let’s help animals in Ukraine”, we’ve just bought 7 dogs’ food bags of 14 kilograms each, so 140 kg!

In July 2024, for the same shelter, we supported them by delivering 20 bags of pet food (each weighing 20 kg), and in September 2024 we provided a further 300 kg.

These efforts are part of our “EMERGENCY UKRAINE” project, which aims to offer hands-on support to animals (both inside and outside Ukraine) as well as to local and nearby organizations. These groups continue to work tirelessly, despite the war and increasingly difficult circumstances, to rescue and care for animals in need.

Sadly, food supplies are consumed very quickly, as Gorod Cobak’s dogs go through 5 bags every two days. Please remember to keep supporting us!

Animals at Gorod Cobak shelter in Mykolaiv, Ukraine, has asked us for help. Their guests, nearly 200 dogs, need a lot of food: 2325 kg only for one month. With the fundraiser “Let’s help animals in Ukraine”, we’ve collected almost 500 euros. Thank to these donations, we could bought 15 dogs’ food bags of 14 kilograms each. Total amount of food delivered to Gorod Cobak so far: 210kg!

For the same shelter, in July 2024, we helped distribute 20 bags (20 kg each) of pet food and, in September 2024, 300 kg. These actions are part of our project “EMERGENCY UKRAINE” through which we concretely support animals (inside and outside Ukraine) as well as local and neighbouring associations that, in the midst of war and in a steadily more difficult context, are working round the clock to save and assist animals.

Unfortunately, supplies run out quickly because Gorod Cobak’s dogs require 5 bags of food for only two days. Remember to keep to support us!

Thanks to donations from OIPA a big gate has been placed, it permits the stop of cars but it is not enough to guarantee safety of dogs.

On July 2012 OIPA presented the Gorlovka shelter for stray animals, based in Gorlovka, Donetsk region (Ukraine) a place that give hospitality to saved strays taking care of them.
In the shelter there is the necessity to create a veterinary clinic, which permits immediate medical cures in case of emergency and the daily monitoring of the health of dogs.

Thanks to all the donations received, the works for the construction of the veterinary clinic finally started.
The clinic will be a part of the biggest building of the shelter and it will be composed of three rooms, one will be the surgery.
Another necessary work is to fence all around the territory of the shelter, which is projected for the next spring.

Arnold Gofman, representative of the Gorlovka shelter for stray animals commented “Without the help of OIPA it could have taken us many years to find money for building the clinic and the fence. And now it is quite obvious that we shall have the veterinary clinic in about a month” and concluded “The director of our shelter Anischenko Alevtina, all the volunteers and all the dogs of the shelter want to thank OIPA for their big help”.

EURO 2012 championship is finished but OIPA still supports Ukrainian strays.
In Ukraine there are several groups of volunteers involved in rescue strays from the streets, not safe places because of poisoning and killings. They save especially ill dogs from the dangerous streets and from municipal structures where dogs will be euthanized in a few days.

Among these groups, the OIPA member league Gorlovka Social Organization on Stray Animals Defence runs a shelter in the Donetsk region with about 140 dogs and cats. The shelter opened in April 2011 and it survives thanks to the work of volunteers and their donations, which allow paying sterilizations and maintenance.
The municipal authorities of Gorlovka don’t help the shelter and they even require the payment of the rent.

It’s necessary to expand the structure and create a veterinary clinic inside the shelter. The presence of the veterinary will be fundamental, because he can ensure medical cares in case of emergency and he will monitor daily the health of the animals. That’s why the project is to renovating an abandoned old building to use it as a veterinary clinic.
This useful project will be monitored and supported by OIPA, thanks to donations received for Ukraine animals.

Donetsk area is sadly famous because of the pit used by the municipality to throw dead dogs. In January 2012, the OIPA member league made a shocking video of this macabre pit.

Weeks ago we told the terrible story of Nastia, the bear cub snatched from her mother in the Lutsk zoo for use it as a tourist attraction. The good news is that on the beginning of July the animal organization Four Paws rescued Nastia from the clutches of animal traders and removed her from the private zoo where she was prisoned.

Four Paws affirmed that Nastia has some health problems, such as underweight and malnourished because of poor nutrition, problems with teeth and diarrhea, so she was treated with antibiotics and vitamins. Nastia has been reunited with her mom Masha in Lutsk, who has slowly recognized her.

Four Paws fights for the liberation of brown bears in Ukraine and in other countries.

Despite what declared by the Ukraine authorities and UEFA, the massacre of stray dogs still going on.
As a matter of fact, dogs continue to be killed at night and in the most brutal ways including: poisoning, electroshock guns or even thrown into concrete while still alive. These killers just shoot the dogs with narcotics, or they just inject them with narcotizes, as the dogs are friendly and not afraid by the human presence. Afterwards, dogs are thrown into mass graves alive and cemented alive.
This story comes to us directly from Kiev, where an Italian photographer, Andrea Cisternino, is reporting the killings and mass massacre with photos, videos and information which are directly posted to Facebook. We are also in contact with Alexandra Mexinova, an Ukrainian animal activist owner of a dog pound with 1.500 dogs and 500 cats.

Despite the issuing of the “Law against animal abuse and cruelty” in 2006, the Government started a brutal campaign against stray dogs in view of the EURO 2012 Championship, showing the population pictures of dogs attacking humans. As a result of this unprecedented hatred campaign, even animal activists are constantly subject to threats or abuse, as considered guilty for the only fact of nourishing and taking care of dogs.
The town houses three structures. For each of these 10,000 Euros have been financed, but there is no trace of these funds. Actually, funds for dog shelters and neutering campaigns are available.
Dogs are killed daily: Just on 27th November 9 dogs died and a whole pack of sterilized and non aggressive dogs being managed by voluntaries personally paying for their upkeep and sterilizations.
On 12 December, as we can see from photos by Andrea Cisternino, somebody killed three small dogs, one of which was sterilized a (red collar indicates that a dog is sterilized).

Andrea and Alexandra tell us that the Ukrainian situation about dogs has always been negative, but from 2010 number of killings has enormously increased because of the EURO 2012 Championship.
The deputy major of Kiev has recently said stray dogs killings will be prosecuted and in case of dead dogs, the police will be sent on the spot together with a veterinary who will perform autopsy in order to verify the poison used to kill it.
The Ministry of Environment has recently declared that killings will be stop for length of six months; en fact this term exactly coincides with the start with the games starts. What will happen once the public attention on this famous event subsides? We highlight that despite the country’s institutions declarations, the situation is still dreadful, we can only imagine the proportions that this mass massacre will assume.
