In June 2026, OIPA Romania launched the campaign “Sterilization, Not Euthanasia: Emergency Appeal for Romania” to protect dogs in Ernei and the surrounding areas of Mureș County.

The initiative, coordinated by the OIPA Representative for Romania in collaboration with the City Hall of Ernei, Blue Paws Association and Second Life Association, aims to prevent unwanted births and reduce the number of dogs exposed to abandonment, capture, shelter confinement and possible euthanasia.

Thanks to the initial funds made available by OIPA, the local team has already been able to carry out the first sterilization procedures.

These initial interventions represent an important and concrete result. Every sterilized dog means fewer unwanted litters, fewer puppies born into vulnerable conditions and fewer animals at risk of ending up abandoned or on the streets.

However, this is only the beginning.

The first sterilization procedures have been carried out in Ernei and surrounding areas thanks to OIPA’s initial support.

Many Dogs Are Still Waiting

The need across the area remains far greater than the resources currently available.

Many stray dogs still need to be safely reached, transported, sterilized and monitored during their recovery. At the same time, some families in the area are unable to afford the veterinary costs required to sterilize their dogs.

Supporting these families is also an essential part of preventing future straying. Without access to affordable sterilization services, unwanted litters may be born, families may struggle to care for the puppies and some animals may ultimately be abandoned.

By helping both stray dogs and dogs belonging to families experiencing financial hardship, the campaign addresses the problem at its source.

Why Continued Action Is Urgently Needed

As highlighted in OIPA’s original appeal, stray dogs in the area face the risk of capture, transfer to public shelters and possible euthanasia after the legal holding period.

Without preventive action, uncontrolled reproduction will continue to place more animals at risk. Every new litter born into already difficult circumstances adds pressure to local communities, animal welfare organizations and shelters.

Sterilization alone cannot solve the entire problem of stray dog overpopulation. However, together with responsible ownership, education and adoption, it is one of the most humane, effective and sustainable tools available.

The first procedures demonstrate that the local team is ready and that the campaign can produce tangible results. What is now urgently needed is sufficient funding to continue.

Firstly, they are suffering the threats coming from a neighbour who can’t stand those poor cats and threated to set on fire the small shelter that the volunteers built for the clowder. The intimidations were so serious that they decided to set up some security cameras.

Feline paunleukopenia is another huge problem affecting cats in the area. This highly contagious viral disease is killing a large number of cats and the treatment to fight it is extremely expensive. Volunteers are doing their best to support the infected cats but they can’t afford these high medical costs. No help from the Veterinary Service, of course.

And to make matters worse, cats have been targeted by a madman who is decimating the cat population in the area. He picked his personal battle against those innocent creatures, a battle made of poison and shotguns. Fortunately, this maniac’s identity is known and one of the volunteers has already reported him to the gendarmerie. What volunteers are asking for is an order to pay compensation calculated on the basis of the veterinary costs spent dor the sterilization of the deceased cats. This amount would be used for the neutering of other cats.

In order to sensitize the population on the issue and encourage the institutions to move rapidly and punish this madman, one of the volunteers launched an online petition. Corsican cats need signatures to obtain justice. Poisoning and shooting at cats can’t be the solution to the stray problem in Corsica.

Abandoned and abused, this beautiful dog spent more than 2 months on the street without a shelter, wandering under the burning sun and in the rain, but when she has been reported to OIPA’s volunteers, she was already pregnant.

Given that she was risking giving birth in a dangerous place for her and her puppies, OIPA’s blue angels have done everything to guarantee a safe shelter for her. Unfortunately, they have seen the Municipality and the municipal dog shelter slam a door in their faces and they had to ask to temporarily take her into foster care in one of their own houses.

Just a few days after her rescue, nine beautiful puppies have been born: fortunately, all are in good health. Given the circumstances and the fact that the blue angels will take care of them until they are ready to be adopted, we now kindly ask for your help to handle the sanitary process (post-weaning food, microchips, deworming and vaccines, all multiplied for 9). _{According to its creators, World Animal Day seeks to “raise the status of animals in order to improve welfare standards around the globe. Celebrating World Animal Day unites the animal welfare movement, mobilizing it into a global force to make the world a better place for all animals. Through increased awareness and education, we can create a world where animals are always recognized as sentient beings and full regard is always paid to their welfare”.}

_{OIPA Cameroon took upon itself to raise awareness about animal welfare among children. This was a very important day not only for animals but also for children, who had the opportunity to learn how to approach}

_{animals correctly and with no fear, helped and guided by OIPA volunteers. The campaign took place at the bilingual primary school of Bafussam, North West region. It was an interactive teaching and learning process in which OIPA volunteers, with the support of teachers, could answer all the questions the kids had. OIPA’s staff was extremely impressed by the high level of interest shown by the children, who openly expressed their love for animals and were keen to learn more about the right way to approach and treat them.}

_{The greatest achievement of the day was the creation of the first animal welfare group in a school in the region. Sixteen children are already registered members of the club; they promised to promote respect for animals among their schoolmates and communities through activities such as theatrical performances, musicals or paintings.}

_{The pupils were glowing with joy when OIPA volunteers distributed more than 50 educational booklets on animal welfare with illustrative pictures explaining how to take care of dogs, interact with them and understand their facial expressions.}  

_{This was a momentous day at the primary school of Bafussam and the schoolteachers expressed gratitude to OIPA Cameroon for choosing their school to celebrate World Animal Day, expressing the hope that initiatives like this one will take place more often.}

_{OIPA Cameroon will continue to contribute to the promotion of animal rights issues in schools in the coming years, setting the goal of printing and distributing 10.000 informative booklets by 2020.}

L'articolo OIPA Cameroon creates the first primary school animal welfare club in the Western Region of Cameroon on World Animal Day proviene da OIPA.

Napoleon, a Pit Bull of about a year and a half, who has been reported to the competent authorities multiple times, has wandered in terrible conditions for various days, annihilated by an incredible pain. Rescued by OIPA Agrigento’s volunteers, who immediately came to help him, Napoleon has been found slumping over on the ground, by that time robbed of strength, at the side of a road.

Fortunately, the larvae that had already started to penetrate the very deep wound in his cranium did not arrive to the brain, even though they have provoked a dangerous infection that has been stopped just on time. Recovered in a vet clinic, Napoleon has had fever for various days and the vets have consequently prescribed the appropriate medication, also to relieve the pain. Now he is feeling a bit better, even though he is still very weak because of the serious anemia status he is currently experiencing, caused by the many tick that covered his body.

Medicated multiple times a day, this young dog is fighting with all his strength to recover as soon as possible and we are rooting for him and hoping to see his eyes full of joy instead of pain.

Let us help Napoleon to get back to a decent and happy life together. Sometimes not much is needed to lean a hand of help, even a small contribution can guarantee the necessary cures for the survival of innocent souls, victims of human ferocity and brutality.
