A three-month initiative for animals in Kurdistan

From October 1st to December 31st, 2024, a comprehensive animal welfare project was implemented in Erbil Province, Kurdistan, thanks to the generous support of OIPA and the excellent fieldwork of the member association KOARP – Kurdistan Organization for Animal Rights Protection, led by Dr. Sulaiman Tameer. The project focused on raising awareness about animal welfare among children and providing essential veterinary care to stray animals.

Education and Awareness Program

A key component of the project involved educating children about animal welfare and responsible pet ownership. The team conducted presentations at two centers:

  • Zewa Center for Children’s Rights Protection: Two presentations were delivered, one on animal welfare in Kurdistan and another on rabies prevention. Over 170 children attended these sessions.
  • Harman Center for IDP/Khanki: The team visited the center seven times, engaging with children in three classrooms per visit. The focus was on animal kingdom, animal welfare, animal rights, wildlife in Kurdistan, and zoonotic diseases. More than 525 children benefited from these presentations.

On November 4th, the team collaborated with Mr. Mitch Huntch, a world adventurer, and his team from the UK (Avarest Mountain/Nepal Journey). Together, they presented to 400 children at Harman Center. The presentations covered the leopard in Kurdistan and wildlife conservation worldwide.

Mobile Clinic Treatment and Vaccination Campaign

The project also included a mobile veterinary clinic that provided essential care to stray animals. The clinic used a range of medicines, vaccines, minerals, disinfectants, vitamins, dewormers, and equipment. Over three months, the clinic treated 157 stray dogs, 72 street cats, and 29 different kinds of birds. Treatments included prophylactic care, vaccinations, wound treatment, deworming, management of conditions like mange, diarrhea, eye infections, and assistance for newborn animals and those with fractures. The clinic also provided external parasite control and feeding to more than 112 stray cats and dogs.

Sending Help to Syria

A part of OIPA’s donation was used to send four bags (60kg) of cat food to volunteers Havine and Hasaka in Syria.

Conclusion

This OIPA-funded project made a significant impact on animal welfare in Erbil Province by raising awareness among children and providing crucial veterinary care to stray animals. The successful implementation of this initiative demonstrates the power of collaboration and the importance of supporting organizations like OIPA that work tirelessly to improve the lives of animals worldwide.

OIPA sponsors a cat vaccination campaign at Tishk university

OIPA sponsors a cat vaccination campaign at Tishk university. Our member association KOARP – Kurdistan Organization for Animal Rights Protection was called to participate and support some educational and awareness activities during an event, a day dedicated to animals under the slogan “Animals have rights to live on this planet as humans have”, organized for the students at Tishk University.

Dr. Tameer participated to a panel discussion to talk about the situation and condition of stray animals in Iraq and Kurdistan region. Additionally, the president of the University gave a speech about the role of animals on this planet and how Islam effectively considers them in Koran. The speaking was followed by a presentation about toxoplasmosis and how this zoonotic disease can be transmitted from cats to humans.  At the end of the lecture, students and speakers received a certificate of appreciation and participation.

During the afternoon, students were involved in following KOARP’s activities on field. OIPA International sponsored the ‘CatVax’ community project aimed at providing vaccination to around 20 street cats living inside the university camp. The campaign included deworming, eye and ear cleaning, nail clipping, external parasite spraying and vaccination (for a total amount of 700 €).

Thanks to our supporters who participated to the fundraising campaign in aid of stray animals in the region of Kurdistan – Iraq, we sent a first donation of 500 EUR (we know that it is not much!) to our member association KOARP Kurdistan Organization for Animal Rights Protection. The entire amount was used by Dr. Sulaiman Tameer, vet and founder of the organization, to buy medicines, vaccines, wound disinfectant, vitamins, de –worming and equipment like gloves and syringes useful for the daily activity of KOARP aimed at rescuing seriously ill or on the verge of death animals in Duhok Province between January and February 2024.
In addition, a part of our donation was used to purchase 100 kg of dry food for dogs and cats.
KOARP was finally able to treat 37 stray dogs, 19 street cats, 11 different birds and 1 wild animal most of them hospitalized for prophylactic treatment, vaccination, wound treatment, de-worming, weakness, mange, diarrhea, eye infection, fracture and external parasites while 35 stray animals were fed.
Our goal is to cooperate with KOARP on long-term projects, including spaying/neutering programs for stray animals, educational activities, vaccinations and medical care for domestic and wild animals.

All this was possible thanks to your support, because every donation can be a lifeline for animals in Kurdistan.

TAKE ACTION TO IMPROVE ANIMALS’ LIVES IN KURDISTAN

HELP OIPA GIVE ANIMALS’ LIVES IN KURDISTAN

OIPA launches an important campaign in aid of stray animals in the region of Kurdistan – Iraq.
A place where episodes of animal cruelty have been continuously reported from local people, associations and advocates, who daily witness incessant abuses on animals.

There are over 300 thousand stray dogs in the Kurdistan Region. Over the years, governorates have employed the most disturbing and violent killing methods to address the problem of dog overpopulation, such as poisoning, shooting or keeping a large number of dogs in shelters without nourishment and medical care, rather than coordinate and implement effective TNVR (trap-neuter-vaccinate-release) programs in different cities.

The most recent episode of cruelty reported refers to stray dogs inside the municipal shelter of Erbil. Numerous people around the city have collected evidence of the inhumane living conditions endured by animals into the facility. A large number of dogs have been collected from the streets and left all together outdoors to die from cold, hunger and thirst. They are not being fed at all and they feed off of each other’s deceased corpses to survive.

Local animal rights organizations organized a meeting with Erbil Governorate to demand better conditions for animals, while they are calling on the Kurdish Regional Government in Iraq (KRG) to take immediate and effective action against animal cruelty. However, their appeal has not been listened.

To help stray animals neglected, abused and abandoned in Erbil and the rest of Kurdistan region, OIPA wants to support its member league association KOARP – Kurdistan Organization for Animal Rights Protection.

KOARP is a non-governmental organization, founded in 2009 by Dr. Sulaiman Tamer – a one of a kind animal activist and veterinarian, focusing on animal rights’ protection in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. Their main activities range from feeding all kinds of animals, especially stray dogs and cats, and guaranteeing them medical care, treatment, vaccination and sterilization, to raising awareness in schools and communities and advocating for the drafting, upgrading and improvement of Animal Rights Protection Laws in Kurdistan.

With your help, we are now trying to collect enough donations to cooperate with KOARP on long-term projects, including spaying/neutering programs for stray animals, educational activities, vaccinations and medical care for domestic and wild animals.
