Episodes of abandonment, neglect and mistreatment of hunting dogs have been widely reported. These dogs spend their lives prisoners in kennels being “released” only during hunting trips for a few hours. Many of them will never experience the comfort of a warm house or the sweet caress of a loving family.

Exploited to the point of exceeding their limits, they are abandoned by owners without emotions or left to themselves trying to survive in unhealthy environment and horrific conditions, when no more useful for their “work”.

More and more people have been reporting abuses on hunting dogs, like the recent case of Giuly and Nanny, two female Breton dogs, set free from suffering by our OIPA animal control officers in Modena, Italy.

Useless for hunting, they had been permanently locked inside a chicken enclosure (2,2 mt x 1,6 mt), forced to live in precarious conditions breathing the sickening smell of their excrement, walking on a floor covered with faeces and urine, and drinking standing water from a bowl full of algae.

The two dogs, aged 6 and 10 years, have never been out for a walk or taken to a veterinary clinic for a regular check-up and their only refugee and shelter from the bad weather was a wooden cube roughly opened on one side with no protection: no pet beds, no blankets, and no towels.

Our animal control guards in Modena, Italy, who had uncovered the conditions of detention, were able to persuade the hunter to give up the dogs. Giuly and Nanny, not sterilized, have been exploited for hunting and probably for breeding, as found suffering of mastitis, for years.

Set free, examined by a veterinarian and welcomed to the municipal shelter, Giuly and Nanny will need some times to recover and forget their bad experience.

We don’t have doubts…A warm-hearted family will call for adopting these two princesses.

Supporting OIPA, you help save more animals!

OIPA has joined the European campaign STOP VIVISECTION which calls for a new European directive on animal experimentation.

Since the 1st April 2012, the European Citizen Initiative grants European citizens the right to take part in the EU law making process by collecting 1 million of signatures. A Citizen Initiative is an invitation addressed to the European Commission to propose a new legal act in policy areas where the EU has competence. To be valid, the initiative has to be supported by at least one million of European citizens of at least 7 of the 28 member states of the EU (a minimum number of signatures is also required for each of the 7 countries).

Locandina_ENG_lrSTOP VIVISECTION gives the European citizens the right to say NO to animal experimentation and calls for a more advanced science protecting both human and animal wellbeing.
Through this initiative, European citizens can urge the abrogation of the directive 2010/63/UE (said “on the protection of animals used for scientific purposes”) and ask for a new directive that does away with animal experimentation and makes compulsory the use, in biomedical and toxicological research, of data relevant for the human species.

So far, the quorum has been reached only in three countries, Italy, Slovenia and Belgium, and if the initiative does not reach the quorum in at least five other member states, there is the risk it will be not taken in consideration by the Commission.

In order to give higher visibility to STOP VIVISECTION in the other European countries involved, OIPA has established a collaboration with Almo Nature, a pet food cruelty free firm, which foresees the production of a video teaser to be publicized in August, anticipating a TV spot that is broadcasted on some Italian and German TV stations.

In Canada, the annual seal hunt has just begun and thousands of seals will dead.
Over the last few years, all major markets banned the import of seals products, including European Union, United States, Mexico, Taiwan and Russia, which has been importing 95% of seal pelts.
Despite that, Canadian government still defends its bloody and already dead industry in front of the WTO – World Trade Organization – where, in the beginning of March, Canada and Norway met European Union to discuss concerning the EU ban of seal products.
Next meeting will be hold within five weeks but in the meantime, Canadian ice turns into red.
Please send the letter of protest to stop the slaughter:

Last weeks, two dogs of the Gorlovka shelter are being shot by hunters, just for fun. Unfortunately, the shelter has not a fence around it so dogs are not enough protected. Thanks to donations from OIPA a big gate has been placed, it permits the stop of cars but it is not enough to guarantee safety of dogs.

On July 2012 OIPA presented the Gorlovka shelter for stray animals, based in Gorlovka, Donetsk region (Ukraine) a place that give hospitality to saved strays taking care of them.
In the shelter there is the necessity to create a veterinary clinic, which permits immediate medical cures in case of emergency and the daily monitoring of the health of dogs.

Thanks to all the donations received, the works for the construction of the veterinary clinic finally started.
The clinic will be a part of the biggest building of the shelter and it will be composed of three rooms, one will be the surgery.
Another necessary work is to fence all around the territory of the shelter, which is projected for the next spring.

Arnold Gofman, representative of the Gorlovka shelter for stray animals commented “Without the help of OIPA it could have taken us many years to find money for building the clinic and the fence. And now it is quite obvious that we shall have the veterinary clinic in about a month” and concluded “The director of our shelter Anischenko Alevtina, all the volunteers and all the dogs of the shelter want to thank OIPA for their big help”.

STOP VIVISECTION was born following numerous European citizens’ urge the European Commission to abrogate the directive 2010/63/EU on the protection of animals used for scientific purposes and to present a new proposal that does away with animal experimentation.
From 1st April 2012 thanks to Citizens’ initiative, European citizens, with 1 million signatures, can take part in legislative decision making process of the European Union.
STOP VIVISECTION gives to citizens the possibility to say NO to animal experimentations.
Article 13 of the Treaty on the functioning of the European Union states that “the Union and the Member States shall, since animals are sentient beings, pay full regard to the welfare requirements of animals”. The official acknowledgement, referred to therein, carries over the moral obligation to respect the fundamental rights of animals: the protection of those rights must be recognized as a European Union priority and must be guaranteed through the medium of a coherent legal framework at European level. Imposing pain and suffering to sentient and defenceless beings, animal experimentation (or vivisection) is, without a shadow of a doubt, to be considered as an intolerable practice.
Ethical reasons, shared by 86% of European citizens, as indicated in a 2006 Eurobarometer survey, are supported by scientists, claiming a lack of scientific validity in using “animal models” for assessing human health issues.
Animal experimentation can be considered a danger for human health and the environment, a brake on development of new methods in biomedical research, based on the most recent scientific achievements and an obstacle to tap into much more reliable, exhaustive, cheaper and faster responses, provided by new technologies expressly conceived for humans.
That is why European citizens urge the European Commission to abrogate the directive 2010/63/EU (on the protection of animals used for scientific purposes) and to present a new proposal geared to doing away with animal experimentation, by the compulsory use, in biomedical and toxicological research, of data specifically conceived for humans and not for animals.
