A three-month initiative for animals in Kurdistan

From October 1st to December 31st, 2024, a comprehensive animal welfare project was implemented in Erbil Province, Kurdistan, thanks to the generous support of OIPA and the excellent fieldwork of the member association KOARP – Kurdistan Organization for Animal Rights Protection, led by Dr. Sulaiman Tameer. The project focused on raising awareness about animal welfare among children and providing essential veterinary care to stray animals.

Education and Awareness Program

A key component of the project involved educating children about animal welfare and responsible pet ownership. The team conducted presentations at two centers:

  • Zewa Center for Children’s Rights Protection: Two presentations were delivered, one on animal welfare in Kurdistan and another on rabies prevention. Over 170 children attended these sessions.
  • Harman Center for IDP/Khanki: The team visited the center seven times, engaging with children in three classrooms per visit. The focus was on animal kingdom, animal welfare, animal rights, wildlife in Kurdistan, and zoonotic diseases. More than 525 children benefited from these presentations.

On November 4th, the team collaborated with Mr. Mitch Huntch, a world adventurer, and his team from the UK (Avarest Mountain/Nepal Journey). Together, they presented to 400 children at Harman Center. The presentations covered the leopard in Kurdistan and wildlife conservation worldwide.

Mobile Clinic Treatment and Vaccination Campaign

The project also included a mobile veterinary clinic that provided essential care to stray animals. The clinic used a range of medicines, vaccines, minerals, disinfectants, vitamins, dewormers, and equipment. Over three months, the clinic treated 157 stray dogs, 72 street cats, and 29 different kinds of birds. Treatments included prophylactic care, vaccinations, wound treatment, deworming, management of conditions like mange, diarrhea, eye infections, and assistance for newborn animals and those with fractures. The clinic also provided external parasite control and feeding to more than 112 stray cats and dogs.

Sending Help to Syria

A part of OIPA’s donation was used to send four bags (60kg) of cat food to volunteers Havine and Hasaka in Syria.

Conclusion

This OIPA-funded project made a significant impact on animal welfare in Erbil Province by raising awareness among children and providing crucial veterinary care to stray animals. The successful implementation of this initiative demonstrates the power of collaboration and the importance of supporting organizations like OIPA that work tirelessly to improve the lives of animals worldwide.

Food brings relief to dogs in Lebanon

Food brings relief to dogs in Lebanon. OIPA recently delivered a vital 600kg of dry food to dogs in need in Lebanon. 30 bags, each weighing 20kg, were distributed to our partner Back2life Dog Rescue and their tailed friends at the Shouf Dog Shelter.

This recent delivery of 600kg of dry food to dogs in Lebanon through our partner Back2life Dog Rescue is a crucial step in providing relief to these animals. However, it’s important to remember that this is just a small fraction of the ongoing need for nourishment for dogs in distress throughout the country. The challenges faced by these animals are significant, and consistent support is vital to ensure their well-being.

We urge everyone to consider contributing to our efforts, as every contribution, no matter how small, makes a real difference in the lives of these deserving dogs.

They are family, not presents. A pet is a lifelong commitment, not a holiday trend

The Pitfalls of Gifting Animals at Christmas

The excitement of Christmas, coupled with the desire to bring joy to loved ones, sometimes leads to the act of gifting an animal. This decision can have unfortunate consequences.

Giving Animals as Gifts: A Discouraged Practice

Giving animals as Christmas gifts – whether puppies, kittens, or any other animal – is never advisable. Welcoming an animal into a family is a significant decision requiring awareness and responsibility. It should not be taken lightly, especially on behalf of others. Caring for an animal is a lifelong commitment demanding time, patience, financial resources, and sometimes even personal sacrifices.

The Unexpected Realities of Pet Ownership

When gifting a puppy, people often overlook these considerations, caught up in the excitement of the moment and assuming the recipient will be overjoyed. Sadly, many animals given as Christmas presents end up abandoned in the following months (which, as a reminder, is a crime punishable by law). This is not always due to cruelty, but rather a realization that the commitment is overwhelming.

Choosing Adoption Over Purchase

If, with careful consideration and a true commitment, you decide to welcome an animal into your family, OIPA urges you to adopt from shelters and rescues. Avoid purchasing animals from pet stores or breeding farms, which may be involved in illegal puppy trafficking.

Alternative Ways to Celebrate Animals

If you are not ready to adopt, already have pets, or wish to give a gift related to animals to friends or family who are animal lovers, consider alternative options this Christmas.

Supporting Abandoned Animals

Contribute to giving abandoned animals the greatest gift of all: a chance at a better life. Every act of kindness, no matter how small, makes a difference. A small contribution can make a huge difference. €10 can feed a dog for a week, €50 can cover the costs of a veterinary check-up, and €150 can help with the spaying or neutering of a dog or cat in need. Every donation counts, no matter the amount.

Let’s make this holiday season brighter for those who need it most

14 dogs fly from Lebanon to a new life. A few weeks ago, we shared the news of the urgent request received by OIPA International from ‘Back To Life Dog Rescue‘, an Italian organization led by Lebanese activist Pascale. They were seeking help to  evacuate 30 dogs from Lebanon, a country threatened by an extremely unstable security situation.

A Successful First Step

Thanks to the incredible solidarity of our supporters, both in Italy and abroad, we were able to make significant progress. The first 14 dogs have already embarked on a new life of freedom.

OIPA International, through your generous donations, covered the travel expenses for 10 of these dogs and purchased two large kennels for transportation. The remaining 4, who had already found loving homes, were sponsored directly by their adoptive families.

Overcoming Challenges

To reduce the initially high transportation costs associated with a cargo flight, we opted for a more economical solution. The dogs traveled on a commercial flight with Middle East Airlines from Beirut to Milan, accompanied by dedicated flight sponsors. Departing in the early hours of the day, they arrived at Milan-Malpensa airport, where they continued their journey to shelters arranged by Back To Life Dog Rescue. The four adopted dogs were welcomed directly at the airport by their overjoyed new families.

A Dream for the Future

Our hope is that all the rescued dogs find loving homes soon, and we dream of evacuating the remaining dogs in Lebanon to offer them a life free from suffering.

Food donation for cats in Tuzla. In response to a heartfelt request from our member association, Wag Wag, in Bosnia and Herzegovina, we could not stand by without offering support. One of their dedicated volunteers, Amra, who cares for over 20 cats in Tuzla, was facing a severe economic crisis. Despite her own struggles, including often going without food, she had been feeding the animals with cooked pasta to prevent them from starving.

In order to help alleviate her burden, we provided about 50 kg of dry and wet cat food to support Amra and her furry companions during this difficult time.

November Support for Animals in Ukraine. Over 500 kg of pet food has been delivered to Mykolaiv, Vilhnovisk and Nykopol.

Aid to Gorod Cobak Shelter in Mykolaiv

Over 280 kg of dry dog food has been delivered to the Gorod Cobak shelter in Mykolaiv, where more than 180 dogs are cared for. This generous contribution will help meet the nutritional needs of these animals, ensuring they stay healthy and well-fed.

Supporting Stray Animals in Vilhnovisk

In addition, 40 kilograms of pet food were sent to Vilhnovisk to support a local volunteer’s efforts to care for stray dogs and cats. Some of this food was also used to provide emergency provisions for pets in need. Among those receiving special attention were Uma, Linxy, Kasya, Kuru, and Sonya, who were given both dry and wet food tailored to their specific dietary requirements.

Assistance for Strays in Nykopol

Furthermore, 200 kg of food was sent to a volunteer in Nykopol, who is looking after approximately 70 stray cats and 30 dogs. This vital support will help sustain the well-being of these animals amidst difficult circumstances.

The Ongoing Need for Animal Aid

The war in Ukraine continues to have a profound impact on both people and animals, and while global attention shifts towards the conflict in the Middle East, the need for assistance remains urgent. Many animals are still relying on our help for survival and care.

Ongoing Commitment from OIPA

OIPA remains committed to supporting animals in need, and we are grateful for the continued support of our donors. Together, we can ensure that these animals receive the care and nourishment they deserve during these challenging times.

OIPA Supporting Animal Welfare in Syria. Recently, a much-needed shipment of cat food, amounting to 60 kg, arrived at the hands of Havin, a dedicated volunteer and activist based in Rojava. Havin has spent years selflessly caring for neglected stray animals in her community, many of which suffer from the dire circumstances caused by Syria’s ongoing devastation. She has become a pillar of hope for these vulnerable creatures, often working tirelessly with limited resources to ensure their survival.

A Heart-Wrenching Decision: Sharing with Fellow Volunteers in Latakia

In the midst of this relentless struggle, Havin faced a heart-wrenching decision. Upon receiving the delivery of cat food, she learned of an equally dire situation in Latakia, where another volunteer was desperately trying to care for cats in a shelter that had been without food for days. Despite the limited supply, Havin chose to share half of the shipment with the volunteers in Latakia, ensuring that the animals there would no longer go hungry.

The Challenges of Delivering Aid: A Region in Crisis

Bringing aid to these areas is incredibly challenging, if not nearly impossible, especially with the situation in Aleppo becoming more critical by the day. The region remains in turmoil, with roads and access points becoming increasingly unsafe for relief efforts. Yet, despite the overwhelming difficulties and the risks involved, the animals in these communities continue to depend on the selfless acts of volunteers like Havin and others, who face danger daily in their mission to save lives.

Humanitarian Effort for Animals in Aleppo and Damascus

A volunteer of Syrian origin, with whom we had also collaborated during the recent earthquake, arrived in Syria to be close to his family. Together with a couple of local volunteers, he made himself available to distribute bags of dry food (480 kg)  that we had purchased to groups of needy stray animals in some accessible areas of Aleppo and Damascus, as well as to a cat shelter.

They arranged to feed around 400 cats and 80 dogs (most of them left behind/dumped by previous owners) who left the city running away from the war.

The Need for Support: A Call to Action

The compassion and bravery displayed by these volunteers are nothing short of inspiring, but they cannot continue this work without our help. The need for support—whether through food, supplies, or financial assistance—has never been greater. Animals and volunteers in these conflict zones are counting on us now more than ever to stand with them in their fight for survival and dignity.

Urgent: Stop the Killing of Stray Animals in Kajjansi, Uganda!

Stop killing strays in Kajjansi. A Call to Action to Prevent the Inhumane Slaughter of Stray Animals

The Kajjansi Town Council in Uganda has made a heart-wrenching decision to kill stray dogs and cats in the wards of of Bulwanyi, Nankonge, Nsangu, Nkungulutale, Sissa, Kitende, and Nakawuka on November 21st, 2024. This cruel and outdated practice is not only inhumane but also ineffective in managing the stray animal population.

As an international animal protection organization, we have written a letter to the Kajjansi Town Council ( Letter to Kajjansi Town Council ) urging them to reconsider this decision and adopt a more humane and sustainable approach, such as Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return (TNVR). TNVR involves capturing stray animals, sterilizing them, vaccinating them against rabies, and then returning them to their original location. TNVR has proven to be highly effective in reducing stray animal populations while also improving their overall health and well-being.

We urge the Kajjansi Town Council to reconsider this inhumane decision and adopt TNVR instead.

How You Can Help:

  1. Send a Letter: Through the form below, you will send a letter to the Kajjansi Town Council expressing your deep concern for what is happening and advocating for TNVR and animal protection.
  2. Share on Social Media: Spread awareness by sharing this article and using the hashtags #StopTheKilling, #TNVR, #AnimalWelfare, #Kajjansi, and #Uganda and any other hashtag or tag you have in mind that can be effective.

Together, we can make a difference and prevent this senseless killing.
Let’s show compassion and work towards a more humane future for all animals.

SEND YOUR PROTEST EMAIL

It’s time to speak up and urge the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye to stop the law that would allow the killing of stray animals throughout the country.
