Every year on 3 March, the international community celebrates World Wildlife Day, a global observance dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of protecting wild animals and plants and preserving the biodiversity that sustains life on Earth.

Wildlife plays a fundamental role in maintaining healthy ecosystems and supporting the balance of nature. Yet today, countless species are facing increasing threats caused by habitat destruction, climate change, illegal wildlife trade, poaching, and the exploitation of animals for entertainment and tourism.

For this reason, the protection of wildlife is not only an environmental priority but also a responsibility toward a natural heritage that belongs to all humanity.

Combating the exploitation of wildlife

Across many parts of the world, wild animals continue to be exploited for profit. From wildlife trafficking and illegal hunting to the use of animals in tourist attractions, these practices cause immense suffering and contribute to the decline of already vulnerable species.

OIPA ETS is actively engaged in international campaigns aimed at combating the exploitation of wildlife and promoting respect for animals in their natural habitats.

Our initiatives focus on several key areas, including:

  • opposing the use of wild animals in tourism and entertainment
  • raising awareness about wildlife trafficking and illegal trade
  • advocating against hunting practices that threaten endangered species
  • supporting actions that prevent poaching and protect wildlife populations.

Through advocacy, education, and collaboration with local organizations, OIPA works to encourage more responsible policies and practices that prioritize the protection of animals and ecosystems.

A global network working for wildlife protection

Through its international network, OIPA collaborates with Member Leagues and representatives around the world to promote concrete initiatives for wildlife protection.

Many of these efforts take place in regions where biodiversity is exceptionally rich but also highly threatened. In Africa, several projects support conservation activities and the protection of endangered species, while in Asia OIPA and its partners work to raise awareness and address practices that exploit wild animals.

Protecting wildlife for future generations

Protecting wildlife requires long-term commitment, international cooperation, and increased public awareness.

Governments, organizations, and citizens all have a role to play in ensuring that animals can live in their natural environments free from exploitation and harm.

On World Wildlife Day, OIPA reaffirms its commitment to defending wildlife around the globe and working alongside its international network to promote a future in which animals are respected, protected, and allowed to thrive in the wild.

OIPA Nepal and the Nepal Animal Welfare and Research Center (NAWRC) keep on conducting their CNVR programme in different communities and different municipalities with the aim to manage humanely the local dog population and eradicate rabies as much as possible.

They already neutered 900 dogs in Kavrepalanchok District (part of Bagmati Province) in coordination with local government bodies and conducted a mass anti rabies vaccination program in which they vaccinated over 500 community and free roaming dogs only in the area of Banepa Municipality. They also organized sterilization and vaccination activities at Manthali Municipality-Ramechhap and all this made possible thanks to the mobile vet clinic they arrange every time in each of the areas touched and the excellent staff of vets who are able to operate outdoors even in sanitary conditions extremely difficult.

Dogs, once caught, are then transferred to the base (the vet clinic equipped with a room to store, operate and treat animals) where they are neutered, vaccinated with ARV, monitored for a day and finally released but they will be followed-up for 5 consecutive days to control their health condition. Since they don’t have a shelter where to keep sick dogs for a longer period and not even enough facilities and equipment, they were able to handle and successfully care and return 75 community and stray dogs after treatment.

The team of NAWRC promotes awareness programmes in rural areas and local communities trying to create a more compassionate, friendly and informed society towards animals.

Nepal and Nepalese people live constantly under the high risk of contracting rabies because there is no proper vaccination system, lack of quality vaccines, misinformation of people, irresponsible pet ownership, no proper rules and regulations on pet and animal ownership. People are unaware of pet caring systems, medications and vaccination cycle, diseases and prevention (cure), ownership identification and its advantages, health reports updates, so the association tries its best to spread the voice.

Approximately 80 percent of the total dog population in Nepal has no owner and the number increases always for the same two main reasons: high rate of abandonment and lack of sterilization. Pets are adopted unconsciously for a certain time for then being abandoned after few months or a year on the street and government has no system or database to track owners, as pets are not even chipped.

What they Do?

  1. Organize mass anti-rabies vaccination campaigns for rabies eradication.
  2. Promote neutering campaigns in collaborations with local government and organizations.
  3. Aware and facilitate people on caring their pets and animals in general.
  4. Guide community to be responsible on Rabies Prevention and create compassionate environments for human-animal healthy life.
  5. Organize mass awareness, college and school awareness programs for Animal Rights and Welfare with presentations on pet ownerships, pet care and other information related to street and ownerless dogs.
  6. Mobilize and lobby local governance, local community, youth society, clubs and social groups for establishing human-animal friendly environments

OIPA Nepal and the Nepal Animal Welfare and Research Center (NAWRC) bring compassion and care to communities. Here, dogs are saved and cared for. Volunteers use their own voice to make the “voiceless” be heard and change this world into a better place for animals and mankind.

One of the main activities they carry out is the management of the population of stray dogs in the municipality of Banepa. Here, dogs live and hunt in packs and can sometimes cause trouble to the communities, as they hunt cows to live, become aggressive towards people and carry rabies, a contagious disease that can be transmitted to humans from saliva of infected animals.

The population needs to be controlled before the number of puppies increases and cause even more problems. This is why OIPA Nepal and NAWRC travel with a special vehicle that allows them to capture the dogs and carry them to vet clinics, where they will be spayed or neutered. They are also vaccinated against rabies and, then, released back in their territory, where they are used to live. After surgery, there is a follow up. The dogs’ process of recovery is monitored even after their release to make sure they will not suffer any complications.

Furthermore, private citizens call and ask for help when they find dogs that need assistance, e.g. after a hit-and-run. Volunteers cure bites caused by fighting, wounds result of animal cruelty and treat the animals for maggots and other parasites.  In the Kavrepalanchok District, many dogs suffer from a severe form of mange called “luto” and are therefore being bathed with special products.

The dogs are loved and cared for and the people are being taught about their welfare and rights.

Please donate to OIPA Nepal to help the dogs that are in need, remember to specify “OIPA Nepal” in the purpose.

DOG INJURED BY A HUMAN STREET ATTACK IN BUDOL

On the 20th April 2019, another extreme case put in an urgent difficult situation OIPA Nepal / Nepal Animal Welfare and Research Center.
Once again the victim of human cruelty is a stray dog, which was found injured by a sharped knife stab in its neck. The dog was rescued by the OIPA Nepal staff Mr Sujan Bhandari right after the attack which took place during the morning at a gas distributor warehouse in Budol, Banepa-6, Nepal. Unfortunately, the Several attempts to discover the guilt has proven to be unsuccessful. The dog injuries required a surgical treatment that was realized at the OIPA Nepal / NAWRC centre. Now, the dog wounds have been sutured and it has been provided with proper painkiller, antibiotics, and skin healing sprays. The animal is going to be kept under close supervision for the next few days and then it will be released back to his own area in the case that adoption will not be found.
This is just one of the many situations of the same kind which occur around the Budol district and that make the OIPA Nepal centre in a dire necessity for appropriate infrastructures and goods to follow efficiently its programme.

NEPALESE ABANDONED COWS AND CALVES

Another problem which is causing a great concert to OIPA Nepal / NAWRC is what regards the abandoned cows and calves. According to the organisation, even though these animals are venerated by the religion and the Nepalese people, the animals are often treated as commodities and later abandoned in the Nepalese streets. Culturally, the cow is the National Animal of Nepal and the Constitution of Nepal has legally protected it from any kind of harms and cruelties. Not only law but Nepalese people worship cows as considered to be the incarnation of Goddess Laxmi (Goddess of Wealth). Moreover, cows are among the five animals that are worshipped in Tihar. They are worshipped as Goddess Laxmi in the third day of Tihar, popular with their name as ‘Gai Tihar’ or ‘Laxmi Puja’. Cows are known as ‘Gai’ in Nepal. The problem of abandoning practices is due to the cow farming trends in Nepal which are subsidized by government funds. This activity has led to a commercialized large scale cow farming with the purpose of higher production in milk practising the Artificial Insemination (AI). The management of the cattle in farms involves that the calves are abandoned in the streets when they are cubs and as soon as they are able to stand on their paws. These animals suffer difficult situations especially when in the streets, because of the hunger, thrust, dog attacks, road accidents, human attacks, etc.

CALL FOR DRISTI

Dristi is a blind dog that has been abandoned in front of OIPA Nepal / NAWRC on the 11th of May.

DRISTI: BEFORE

The dog urges prompt medical treatments to cure both of its damaged eyes. Due to the lack of sufficient economic resources, infrastructures, and vehicle, OIPA Nepal is searching for fundings to provide treatment to the animal. OIPA Nepal’s Plan for Dristi is to give to the dog the antibiotics and de-worming therapy; perform the surgical removal of both eyes as they are completely damaged; find good sponsors and adoption in Nepal or internationally.
OIPA Nepal is committed to establishing the ‘Animal Welfare Trust’, a shelter structured to provide 24 hours of clinical care, food, and accommodation for dogs in difficult conditions like DRISTI.

DRISTI – AFTER

The total cost of the Dristi’s treatment planned by the organisation is about NRs 92,500 ($925). Until the 17th of May 2019, just 33.33% of the fund has been reached by donations.

After some medical treatments, Dristi’s health conditions have got better. But it’s not enough yet! She might still develop cancerous tissues in eye balls if left like this.

Please help support recovery efforts for Dristi! Make a donation to OIPA Nepal!

MISSION “GOD HANUMAAN”: CALL FOR IMMEDIATE ACTION!

A monkey kept inside a cage in a Nepalese temple needs your support!

OIPA International has just received an urgent plea for help from OIPA Nepal – Nepal Animal Welfare and Research Center NAWRC.

Indeed OIPA Nepal has received a complaint from one of its supporters that was visiting Janakpur for 5 days. He witnessed a monkey being tortured within a temple from local people that, for religious beliefs, regarded him as a Hanumaan. There has been a misinterpretation of what worship and religion really are!

Furthermore, it is against laws and regulations of People’s Republic Government of Nepal (GoN). This is why with the support of government agencies, we are trying to rescue the monkey and take him back to his proper habitat.

The monkey, nicknamed “Hanumaan”, is unfortunately old and depressed. Therefore, we need the help of experts. OIPA volunteers have already been mobilized and are getting in touch with the District Forest Office in order to start medications as soon as possible.

In the past, another monkey had already died in that same temple. Alternative ways to worship hanuman must be found (e.g. to build a statue). Nepalese people strongly believe in religion and worship gods. There are over 3300K gods being worshipped. Among these, god Hanumaan is believed to be the incarnation of Lord Shiva, the God of Gods, in form of monkey. People believe worshipping monkeys shall appease god Hanumaan and, therefore, make life prosperous!

Such a sad story deserves even a small donation. OIPA Nepal volunteers need your help to carry out investigation and rescue activities!

Please support us, make a donation!

In order to ensure that your donation reaches the monkey Hanumaan, it is crucial to indicate that the donation is intended for “OIPA NEPAL”.

“Strange Creature” for the locals of Kakre, Nala, Kavrepalanchok District of Nepal, Large Indian Civet was observed injured, lying in the dry field.

Wounds in forelegs, neck and broken nose proves that this creature has undergone through a fight. Was it because of internal fights for matting superiority or a defence of larger wild animal attacks, but the wounds are observed infected and have deep wounds.

received_1878197682468285OIPA Nepal volunteers, NAWRC, were contacted by locals on Sunday 25th February at evening time. So, the day after, early morning, they rush with presence and consensus of District Forest Office, District Livestock Service Office and Local Police Station, to rescue and give medical support to the animal.

OIPA volunteers provided treatments to the injured paw and clean the wounds, but they still need resources to handle this kind of emergency cases in wildlife rescues and treatments. They named the animal Passion.

PASSION was found terrified, scared, traumatized and fraustrated when they first see him. He was lying in dry field, dehydrated and hopeless since last one week. Local people were offering him boiled rice and milk, but it was not his most suitable food. So, having unproper diet for a week in a strange habitat made him weak. His bones marks were seen outside of the skin.

received_1878197789134941OIPA volunteers used jute sacks to cover his eyes and hold him to start medication. First they were able to give him low dose of sedative medicine and wait till he was quiet. Then they started pain management and gave him first dose of Antibiotics. After few minutes of rest with antibiotics, we were able to carry him towards our vehicle to clean his wounds and bandage the leg. His nostrils were seriously damaged, both forelegs were injured, there were several wounds in his neck and tail, so he was not able move.

The road was rough, muddy and unmanaged, though we manage to keep the animal safe and relieved.

Now, OIPA volunteers are cleaning the wounds, feeding the animal and keeping it in a cage to recover fully. Once the Civet will recover fully, OIPA volunteers will return it in its natural habitat.

If you want to help the Civet to recover please donate and help the volunteers to provide vet treatments, food and professional equipment for wildlife keeping.

Thank you!

Recently, dogs mass killing is happening in Nepal frequently. It’s not clear who is behind this evil deeds and OIPA volunteers are investigating on this.

Since few months, OIPA volunteers are receiving messages from citizens in Kathmandu about the cruelties against street dogs. Someone is stealing dogs at night, transporting them overcrowded in vehicles, killing them secretly and throwing them along rivers’ sides. OIPA suspects that some organization or pet shop is behind this crimes. Most of the dogs killed are from special breeds like German Shepherd and they were wearing collars at the death moment.

16473259_10206539433805191_8047670191643103088_nFree Roaming Street Dog Population is growing rapidly in Nepal, due to unmanaged slaughter houses feeding raw meat to street dogs and unmanaged garbages in streets. There have been episodes of dog’s human attacks, because too many uncontrolled groups of stray dogs are populating urban areas. Gang of 10-15 street dogs together will be life threaten for street calves, and even humans during evening and nights.

This is not just a security problem for citizens, but as well for animals: due to aggressive behaviour of some street dogs, peoples and local authorities plan “Mass Poisoning” or “Mass Culling” of free roaming dogs.

The number of dogs with rabies is growing constantly, OIPA volunteers do not have enough equipments and resources to handle these cases risk free. Thousands of street dogs are not vaccinated or medically treated at all and 80% of dog bite cases are registered by school children.

NAWRC, OIPA Nepal volunteers, are trying as best as they can to tackle the situation, but the negligence of the Government and the authorities is tremendous.

The only way OIPA volunteers can support both human and street dogs health is by continuing the Catch-Neuter-Vaccinate-Monitor-Release (CNVMR) Program. It needs huge amounts of funds and they are carry on the program from debt capital.

OIPA asks to the Nepalese Government to take action to manage the stray dog population and to guarantee the security both to human and animals. It is not acceptable that pet dogs are stolen, killed and thrown in the bushes.

OIPA asks as well to the Government to support the CNVR program of OIPA Nepal NAWRC

Sir/Madam

Hereby to express my deep indignation about how the “stray dogs problem” is faced by the city of Kathmandu and by the whole country. The capture and killing of stray dogs is an inhuman, barbaric action to be punished. I hope that the authorities will immediately stop this unacceptable situation, and will develop the right means through which it is possible to solve the stray problem: CNVR programs. Besides this, to prevent a further similar trend, it is necessary to implement educational campaigns, in order to raise awareness among the population about the importance of spaying animals and the right way to look after their pets.

IT’S ALL YOUR SUCCESS!

NAWRC have been working in Kavrepalanchok District of Nepal. Our present concentration is in Street Dogs Population Management by Birth Control Program. Its called Catch-Neuter-Vaccinate-Monitor-Release (CNVMR) Program. Street dogs are sterilized, vaccinated Anti-Rabies Vaccines and given required Medical treatments.

In our previous survey, we counted 559 street dogs, 260 females and 299 males. We neutered 420 street dogs and repeat the survey. Second survey shows 713 street dogs in Banepa municipality.

Kavrepalanchok district is the Epicenter of earthquake in 2015 NepalQuake and there were more damages. Still tremors are frequent and street dogs are scattered everywhere. They keep migrating from different places. Matting seasons started now.

We observed 18 male dogs following 1 female dog. Its panic and traumatic sight we share about. We need to neuter 384 street dogs again.

We are working isolated in remotes, with no easy access to market area, electricity and internet keeps interrupted, no own infrastructures, no shelter, no resources and no regular funding sources.

Government have no funds to support animals and local peoples can’t support due to low incomes. We completely depends on international supports only!

600 Street dogs neutered and vaccinated in 80 working days. Researches published shows un spayed female dog and her generations will produce 67,000 more street dogs in our community.

From our surveys, we found 8 street dogs per 100 human population. It makes 20,000 street dogs in this district, who are never vaccinated and medically cared. WHO listed Nepal as the Highly risky nation in Rabies since last 15 years. Nobody knows how many die unknowingly from Rabies in Nepal. No UNICEF, no UNO, no Save The Children, no Red Cross, no Rotary, no Amnesty etc works or supported Rabies Control till date. More than 2,00,000 school children and youths are living in darkness about Rabies in this district.

We work for Development of Animal Welfare in Nepal as they don’t have their own Voice for themselves. We need to take responsibility to be their voices. They need us because we are for them, not just our self.

Your Support will Enable us to Support Them!

LET’S MAKE THE DIFFERENCES TOGETHER! LET’S MAKE THE WORLD BETTER TOGETHER!
LET’S BE A PART OF THEIR LIFE TOGETHER!
LET’S GIVE A CHANCE FOR MAKING THIS WORLD BETTER!
LET’S BE THEIR VOICES TOGETHER!

DONATE OUR PROGRAM, OUR MISSION and OUR WORKS!
