In a country where the welfare of animals is completely ignored and people refuse to sterilize their pets, it is up to the righteous citizens to provide relief to abandoned and abused animals. OIPA volunteers in Tunisia take care of a high number of stray and abandoned cats and dogs, saving and rescuing one or more animals every day.

Caramel, a 6 months old kitten, was found wondering the streets. He was very skinny and was not able to eat because of an infected wound in his mouth that was infested with maggots. The volunteers do not know what happened to him, but presume he hurt himself in a fight with other stray cats. He was taken to the vet, treated with antibiotics and sterilized. At the moment he is boarded at the vet’s, but he is looking for a great family that would love to watch him grow into a beautiful cat.

Camo and Milla were separated from their mother and abandoned when they were not even one month old. OIPA’s volunteer found them surrounded by trash trapped into a thorny bush. Their rescue was not easy and the vet had to remove many thorns from their tiny bodies (and from the volunteer’s head). Camo, the white boy, and Milla, the brown girl, were both treated for worms and fleas and received standard vaccinations. They also were vaccinated against parvovirus, which is a contagious virus that causes lethargy, vomiting, fever, and diarrhea with a mortality of 91%, as some cases were reported in the area. They were adopted together and now have a new dog friend, who was a former stray.

OIPA Tunisie’s volunteers need your help to cover the expenses for the veterinary treatments and, thanks to your donations, they will save the life of many more cats and dogs in need. Please remember to specify OIPA Tunisie in the purpose.

Our volunteers in Tunisia take care of many stray cats and dogs. A few weeks ago, on the road to feed a cat colony, they bumped into a cardboard box next to the trash. Before looking inside, they had already knew what they would find: word got out that OIPA volunteers rescue abandoned cats and dogs. The people who live nearby know that our big-hearted volunteers often walk by that dumpster, and somebody considers it as the perfect place to abandon puppies and kittens. This has already happened more than once.

Inside the box, there was a litter of six little fluff balls. The puppies were newborn, just a couple of days old, their eyes were still closed.

They were immediately taken to a vet. Apart from being very hungry, all six puppies were healthy. But the problem was, how to feed them?

Luckly Maya, an adorable dog, was able to help. She had recently given birth, but, sadly, a pack of strays killed her puppies. She still had milk and she accepted the six new-born puppies as her own.

Maya turned out to be a loving mom and the puppies are getting stronger and stronger every day. As soon as they will be ready for adoption, our volunteers will look for a forever home for them.

Stories like this make should remind everyone about the importance of neutering pets. Too many people believe that it is unnatural, nevetheless, some of those also think it is acceptable to separate puppies and kittens from their mother and throw them in the trash.

It is impossible to understand how someone could break up puppies from their mother, knowing their lives will be at risk. OIPA’s volunteers will do their best to write a happy ending for these six little guys’ story.

If you wish to supporting these six lovely puppies and their adoptive mother Maya, make a donation to OIPA. Don’t forget to specify OIPA TUNISIA in the purpose.

OIPA volunteers in Tunisia rescue injured cats and dogs nonstop. Last Friday it was the turn of Oscar.

When our volunteer Emanuela saw him while driving, she immediately stopped and came towards him.

The dog was exhausted and tuck into the food and water he was given by Emanuela.

The dog exhibited a deep inflamed lesion around his neck, a sure sign of an extremely tight collar.

He was loaded on the car without question and brought to the vet, who stated that his condition was quite critical: his neck wound was infested with maggots, he had a terribly high temperature, he was anaemic. He was checked out and treated by the vet without protest. He was immediately administered intravenous antibiotics, anti-inflammatory, vitamins, and painkillers.

Oscar is around ten years old and we do not know anything about his past. For sure, his life hasn’t been a happy one, at least until now. Maybe he was abandoned because he was too old, or maybe he managed to escape. Whatever his story is, OIPA volunteers will do everything to help get Oscar’s mind off it all.

Oscar requires to be hospitalized for one week because he must remain under medical supervision and needs intravenous therapy and other treatments.

As soon as he feels better, OIPA volunteers will look for a very special forever family for him.

OIPA volunteers are covering all Oscar’s medical costs. Please help them, make a donation! Causal: OIPA Tunisia – Oscar

Our volunteers in Tunisia are always super busy. Tunisia cannot be considered a pet-friendly country; cats and dogs are killed every day. Most people are not sensitive to the cause and there is a substantial lack of education on animal rights.

For this, our volunteers have to fight every single day against the ignorance and malice of people and institutions.

Below you can read the stories of some of the dogs rescued and treated by OIPA volunteers.

JOY spent her first few years with a shepherd. For a dog, life is not easy when owned by this kind of people.

Kept in chains, neglected and underfed, she also had her tail docked. Our volunteers managed to persuade him to give them the dog. Joy recovered well and after she got her strength up, she has been sterilized.

She has been moved to a shelter, all on our volunteers’ money. She cannot live on the street because it is too dangerous. The Tunisian institutions still shoot dogs, and so do many private individuals. Many people still and foolishly believe that dogs are impure creatures. Definitely, Tunisia is not a safe place for them.

MICKY

This puppy was found in the conditions you can see in the video: dragging himself along the roadside, frightened and totally alone.

The vet said that he had almost certainly been bitten by one or more dogs. He was quarantined in a volunteer’s backyard. We have done everything to get him back on his paws… physical therapy, punctures…

After the quarantine lifted, we helped him socialize with other dogs because after a long period of isolation he was terrified of dogs.

Micky can run and play now…even if his paw plays tricks on him once in a while.

Micky has had a troubled past, but now he is a socialized and sweet dog.  He is actually living in a shelter, waiting for a forever family.

And lastly, a happy-ending story

This is SAMI. Someone locked him up in a sewer pipe, leaving him to die. OIPA volunteer Emanuela heard his moans, but could not find a way to free him easily. She has therefore decided to feed and water him through a hole.

Fortunately, it did not take a long time to earn his trust. After a few days, she finally got him out of what could have been his tomb. Sami is now happily adopted!!

OIPA volunteers in Tunisia are taking care of a high number of stray and abandoned cats and dogs. Thay rescue one or more animals almost every day. Kittens and puppies who lost their mom, mistreated or hit-and-run cats and dogs…every day a new creature to take care of.

We will now tell you the story of two of them: SOFIA and RICKY.

Some days ago, our volunteer Emanuela was driving to work when she saw a suffering dog on the other side of the motorway. She immediately stopped her car and (dangerously!) crossed the motorway.

This beautiful dog (a nice female) let Emanuela get close to her. The dog looked exhausted but our volunteer managed to put her in the car. They immediately went to the vet for a check-up.

SOFIA had a very high fever, was profoundly anaemic, dehydrated, covered in ticks and fleas. Moreover, she had an old fracture in a leg.

Ines, the vet, gave her IV fluids, iron and vitamins, and applied a bandage over the broken leg.

Sofia is a young dog, around 1-year old. She is recovering well, but she still needs medical treatment.

Sofia is a lovable dog and we are sure that she will fully recover and be adopted by a beautiful family!

 —–

Some time ago, OIPA blue angels in Tunisia rescued a pregnant dog that gave birth to a litter of adorable dogs. Among them, there was RICKY. He had been adopted months ago, and constantly monitored by our volunteers. Sadly, sometimes volunteers’ commitment is not enough: notwithstanding the checks, 3 weeks ago Ricky was found tied with a rope to a dumpster. Rescued by a volunteer, Ricky is now sheltered awaiting a forever home.

—

And finally, a happy story: this nice black and white dog, Ricky’s sister, was adopted a few months ago by a girl.

Every time she took the dog out for a walk, the neighbour kid went mad with joy when he saw LADY. The special thing about the kid is that he has autism and therefore difficulty expressing his feelings… Lady’s owner, touched at the kid’s reactions, finally decided to give the kid Lady. In the end, they are neighbours and she will always have the opportunity to visit Lady.
