OIPA ETS has sent formal letters to the competent Turkish authorities and institutional bodies, calling for dialogue and further information regarding the management and welfare of stray dogs in Türkiye.

In recent months, OIPA has received communications from citizens and animal protection advocates expressing concerns about the conditions in which stray dogs are being collected, transported and accommodated in certain areas of the country.

Some of the reports received have raised questions regarding shelter conditions, animal welfare during capture and transportation, and the fate of dogs following their removal from the streets.

In response to these concerns, OIPA has formally contacted the relevant Turkish institutions, including the authorities responsible for animal protection and stray animal management, while also bringing the matter to the attention of the Embassy of the Republic of Türkiye in Rome.

The initiative is intended to promote a constructive and institutional dialogue and to obtain further information regarding the practical implementation of the current legal framework and the measures adopted to safeguard animal welfare.

OIPA recognises the complexity of managing large populations of stray animals and the responsibilities of public authorities and municipalities in protecting public health and safety. At the same time, the organisation considers it essential that the measures adopted ensure appropriate standards of animal welfare and minimise fear, stress and unnecessary suffering.

Through its communications, OIPA has drawn attention to several key aspects, including appropriate capture and transportation procedures, veterinary assistance and shelter conditions, animal registration and traceability, monitoring and inspection mechanisms, and compliance with the safeguards established by law.

The organisation has also highlighted the importance of strengthening preventive and sustainable approaches, including sterilisation, vaccination, identification, responsible ownership and adoption programmes.

OIPA believes that cooperation between public institutions, municipalities, veterinary professionals, civil society and animal protection organisations can play an important role in developing effective and long-term solutions.

The organisation has therefore requested further information and available official data from the competent authorities and remains open to constructive dialogue and cooperation with Turkish institutions and local stakeholders.

The full letter sent by OIPA ETS to the competent Turkish authorities can be read at the following link:

ABANDONED AND NEGLECTED TWICE, A GENTLE PITBULL RESCUED BY VOLUNTEERS OF OIPA TURKEY NEEDS YOUR HELP FOR HIS CARE https://www.oipainternational.org/turkey-pitbull-abandoned/ Wed, 19 Jul 2023 10:22:42 +0000 https://www.oipainternational.org/?p=18958 L'articolo ABANDONED AND NEGLECTED TWICE, A GENTLE PITBULL RESCUED BY VOLUNTEERS OF OIPA TURKEY NEEDS YOUR HELP FOR HIS CARE proviene da OIPA.

A very gentle pitbull was found abandoned in the forest outside Istanbul, wandering in the area where our volunteers feed and take care of other stray dogs.

After a nationwide ban came into force in 2022 against breeds considered dangerous, the rate of abandonment of this type of dogs has unfortunately increased.

The dog was very skinny, his tail was cut at the end and he was not even able to sit and lay down comfortably. He turned on himself at least five times, every time he tried.

Considering his critical condition, our volunteers decided to find for him a temporary home to guarantee the dog a safe place where to recover. Unfortunately, the person who was fostering him, after 15 days called saying that the dog had lost additional weight.

Volunteers rushed to the house to check dog’s condition, finding out that the animal got worse because of the improper care.

The dog was not eating, he had wounds all over his body, and was full of fleas and ticks. Taken to the vet clinic, he underwent medical examinations. Doctor tried to feed him to verify his appetite and applied a flea treatment.

Test’s results have shown a severe blood and ear infection.

Now, he is guest in a dog boarding and has started different treatments. The therapy will last for a long time and once recovered he will be spayed.

If you want to help this sweet dog recover well and start a new life after being abandoned and neglected twice, you can contribute to his care

Volunteers of OIPA Pendik, a district of Istanbul (Turkey) feed more than 200 stray dogs in 8 different areas struggling daily with emergencies.

So many dogs are left behind due to the high rate of abandonment and lack of sterilization. Municipalities do not help sterilize stray dogs, and while females continue to give birth to puppies who have no future and risk to die from hunger and diseases, many purebred and mix bred dogs, such as amstaff and pitbull – banned in the country – are abandoned after a life of abuse.

OIPA International purchased for them about a ton of dry food, but there’s still so much to do to cover the emergencies.

We need your help for the animals looked after by volunteers including the 16 sick, disabled and senior dogs placed in their home shelter.

Even a small donation can give volunteers a big relief and will help fill the stomach of the less fortunate.

DUMPED IN A RURAL AREA MUM AND PUPPIES HAVE BEEN RESCUED AND MOVED TO A SAFER PLACE https://www.oipainternational.org/oipa-turkey-mum-and-puppies-rescued/ Fri, 28 Oct 2022 11:00:21 +0000 https://www.oipainternational.org/?p=16206 L'articolo DUMPED IN A RURAL AREA MUM AND PUPPIES HAVE BEEN RESCUED AND MOVED TO A SAFER PLACE proviene da OIPA.

During one of their routine walks, feeding stray dogs in Kurtkoy forest, volunteers came across a scared mum and her litter of ten puppies. Dumped with no mercy in a rural area when they needed warmth and affection most, they would not have survived out in the cold and rain and with no food for the mum.

The mother, clearly unable to live in the forest, was probably kicked out of her house because she was pregnant and to keep her babies safe she dug everywhere to hide and protect them from danger.

Despite the emergencies and the very difficult times volunteers have been going through, they did not feel like leaving this sweet mum and her puppies facing the winter all alone. Rescued from the forest and taken to a warmer and comfortable place, now the sweet mum is fed properly and can nurse her cute puppies safely.

These little ones will soon need specific food, internal and external parasite treatments, and vaccinations, while the mother will be sterilized as soon as possible.

❤️ Volunteers appeal to your good heart and ask for support to cover the expenses ❤️

FUNDRAISER IS CLOSED!

What happens if owned and stray dogs are not spayed/neutered?

Unwanted litter of puppies are dumped everywhere with little chance of survival.

This year with the summer drought particularly intense, OIPA Turkey’s volunteers are struggling to feed them all in Kurtkoy Forest.

These little ones can’t even find water to quench their thirst, and their number is so large that volunteers don’t have enough resources to look after all of them.

If you want to give these puppies a chance, lend a hand and support volunteers in Turkey.

NEW LITTERS, ABANDONED PETS AND DOGS IN NEED OF VET CARE. Every season of the year is extremely difficult for an animal who has no home, but spring and summer are tough also for volunteers who have to deal with unwanted litters, new births and the rescue of abandoned pets. The lack of sterilization activity of owners and local municipalities does increase substantially the already huge number of stray dogs roaming on the territory.

This is a scenario we are used to see in many countries and Turkey is not an exception. There, OIPA’s volunteers struggle to assist the great number of dogs located in Kurtköy area (Istanbul) with the few resources available. Dogs that, despite being registered, are left all alone trying to survive with food and water provided solely by volunteers, who do not only feed animals but handle emergency of any kind every single day.

Volunteers have to vaccinate puppies, spay and neuter adults and young dogs, apply flea & tick treatments, give local therapies and rescue sick and wounded animals that would hardly survive without being transferred to a clinic for examination, care and medication. All is done with donations and paying at their own costs.

Like a recent case of a German shepherd barely able to stand on its own legs found abandoned or another dog with a bulge on the head and a female full of mange.

OIPA Turkey need your support to buy food, flea and tick treatments, pay vaccinations, sterilizations and vet care for dogs that otherwise wouldn’t have even an acceptable life.

A little help can really save a life

This time not solely providing food but contributing to the vet care necessary to some of the animals they have recently rescued.

A three months kitten, found in the forest extremely weak with a corneal ulcer caused by a severe eye infection. Thanks to your help he was treated with antibiotics, anti-inflammatory, supplements and vitamins.

A four months puppy affected by parvovirus was treated with fluid therapy and another puppy of five months affected by acute bronchitis and intestinal parasites treated with antibiotics, supplements and vitamins.

Finally, three abandoned pit bulls (2 females and 1 male) could have been spayed/neutered, chipped and transferred to a safer place.

❤️ Thanks to all of you and thanks to whom will continue to help stray animals in Turkey now that it’s winter time and they live out in the cold ❤️

Many people may consider Turkey as one of the most virtuous countries concerning the treatment reserved to stray animals, but remember…sometimes the truth is not exactly as it seems. More than 5,000 stray dogs live totally abandoned only in the area of Kurtköy Forest – outside Istanbul – and after the speech of President Erdoğan on Dec. 25 the future of those animals is even more uncertain.

Turkish President ordered municipalities to remove stray dogs from the streets and place them in shelters, which unfortunately are known to be in terrible conditions all over the country.

On the same day of the speech, while we were all concerned about the future of stray dogs in Turkey, our tireless volunteers spent the entire Christmas day feeding the so many adults and puppies they constantly take care for in the area of Kurtköy.

OIPA Turkey’s volunteers distributed about 300 kg of dry and wet food donated by OIPA International with your immense support to the project “Save a Stray”. A day full of happiness for these dogs.

❤️ You can continue to help stray animals in Turkey. They are so much in need of food and medical treatment.

Every little help can make a huge difference for their life❤️

Volunteers of OIPA Turkey are running out of food and if they can’t feed stray dogs in the area of Kurtkoy forest outside Istanbul, many of them will probably die from starvation, especially new born puppies!

It is usual to see dogs looking into the garbage trying to find something to eat and in the worst cases, when they can’t find something eatable, they arrive to the point to attack their fellows or kill puppies to sate their hunger.

Volunteers are doing their best to provide dogs food and feed them properly, but when they don’t have enough funds, it is difficult to help all of them. There is not only food to buy, but also vet invoices for medications, examinations, therapies and treatments to pay.

You can donate food to the over 500 strays cared for by OIPA Turkey
