Morocco culls dogs for FIFA 2030.

In preparation for the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which Morocco will co-host with Spain and Portugal, the Moroccan government has launched a horrific campaign to cull up to three million stray dogs.

This involves:

  • Poisoning: Dogs are poisoned with strychnine, either by direct injection or through contaminated food.
  • Mass Shootings: Government-mandated gunmen patrol day and night, shooting dogs indiscriminately. Many suffer slow, agonizing deaths, and their bodies are often left to decompose.
  • Barbaric Traps: Dogs are trapped in cruel clamps and thrown into trucks, destined for “fake dispensaries” where they are burned alive in incinerators or dumped in mass graves. Many are not dead when buried.

This violence is occurring in public, witnessed by children, citizens, and tourists. The United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child has expressed concern about the harmful effects of children being exposed to such violence. On September 18th, 2023, they issued General Comment 26, stating: “Children must be protected from all forms of physical and psychological violence and from exposure to violence, such as domestic violence and violence inflicted on animals.”

FIFA must be aware of this cruelty and and cannot remain silent!

OIPA is calling on FIFA to publicly condemn Morocco’s actions, investigate and demand an end to the dog killings threatening to withdraw Morocco’s co-hosting rights for the World Cup. (Read our letter : 2030 FIFA World Cup_OIPA Appeal January 2025)

A dog rescued with a cut off paw – OIPA Italy volunteers in Alcamo, Trapani, rescued a young puppy named Green who was found in a state of extreme suffering. His hind leg was cut-off and almost completely skinned, with bone and flesh exposed. The extent of his wounds suggests he may have been caught in a cruel trap set for wild animals, foxes or wild boars. This traumatic event is a stark reminder of the barbaric practice of poaching and the suffering it inflicts on countless animals.

Unfortunately, to prevent the risk of sepsis in the severed leg, amputation was unavoidable. Thankfully, the surgery was successful, and upon waking from anesthesia, Green was already able to take his first steps, managing to stand on his three remaining legs.

Despite now being a tripod dog, Green is completely self-sufficient. Once his recovery is complete, he will be able to walk and run just like any other dog. Full of life and with an irresistible little face, Green is only one year old.

Let’s help him recover from his traumatic experience, make his beautiful green eyes shine, and help him find a loving family to spend the rest of his life with.

Together, we can offer a bright future to this sweet and courageous little dog, who undoubtedly has a difficult past behind him, but who has shown remarkable strength in facing pain and overcoming his fears.

You can help Green by making a donation to cover the costs of his veterinary care.

Urgent: Stop the Killing of Stray Animals in Kajjansi, Uganda!

Stop killing strays in Kajjansi. A Call to Action to Prevent the Inhumane Slaughter of Stray Animals

The Kajjansi Town Council in Uganda has made a heart-wrenching decision to kill stray dogs and cats in the wards of of Bulwanyi, Nankonge, Nsangu, Nkungulutale, Sissa, Kitende, and Nakawuka on November 21st, 2024. This cruel and outdated practice is not only inhumane but also ineffective in managing the stray animal population.

As an international animal protection organization, we have written a letter to the Kajjansi Town Council ( Letter to Kajjansi Town Council ) urging them to reconsider this decision and adopt a more humane and sustainable approach, such as Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return (TNVR). TNVR involves capturing stray animals, sterilizing them, vaccinating them against rabies, and then returning them to their original location. TNVR has proven to be highly effective in reducing stray animal populations while also improving their overall health and well-being.

We urge the Kajjansi Town Council to reconsider this inhumane decision and adopt TNVR instead.

How You Can Help:

  1. Send a Letter: Through the form below, you will send a letter to the Kajjansi Town Council expressing your deep concern for what is happening and advocating for TNVR and animal protection.
  2. Share on Social Media: Spread awareness by sharing this article and using the hashtags #StopTheKilling, #TNVR, #AnimalWelfare, #Kajjansi, and #Uganda and any other hashtag or tag you have in mind that can be effective.

Together, we can make a difference and prevent this senseless killing.
Let’s show compassion and work towards a more humane future for all animals.

15 stray dogs awaiting sterilization in Ankara. OIPA’s member association in Turkey, Bir Pati De Sen Tut, contacted us about an urgent case. At one of their feeding stations for stray dogs in Ankara, fifteen dogs need to be soon spayed/neutered.

Several months ago, OIPA vaccinated new born puppies at this same location. Those puppies have since then grown up, while additional puppies have been recently abandoned in the area. Sterilization and castration of dogs in reproductive age is essential to prevent the emergence of new homeless animals.

Our member association strives to consistently collaborate with the municipal shelter in conducting dog sterilization activities. Unfortunately, they have encountered challenges as local authorities have not granted enough space for castration.

Despite Bir Pati’s ongoing efforts to push Ankara municipality, time remains a pressing concern.

It is imperative for OIPA to intervene in supporting Bir Pati and its strays, in order to avoid the birth of new litters. Regrettably Turkey, particularly in Ankara and Istanbul, faces exorbitant veterinary expenses due to soaring inflation rates.

The cost of one sterilization procedure may amount to 270 euros.

The fifteen dogs who are expected to be spayed/neutered are

  • 10 female puppies
  • 2 adult female dogs
  • 3 male dogs who reached mating period and cause fights in the feeding area.

If you can’t sponsor a dog sterilization, you can anyway help us with a small donation.

Turkey votes the law to kill stray animals

On July, 30 2024, the Turkish Parliament (Turkish Grand National Assembly) has approved the new law – renamed as “Massacre Law” by animal right adovcates – aimed at removing millions of stray dogs and cats from Turkey’s streets. As per amendments approved on July 24, stray animals will be collected from the streets ending up in neglected and overcrowded municipal shelters for being euthanized if they are not adopoted.

The law states that dogs who are sick, those who have diseases that can be transmitted to any other animal (paragraph concerning diseases transmitted to other animals is however not clear, as it may be any disease, even those that can be easily treated like flu), dogs belonging to prohibited breeds, such as pitbulls and dogo argentinos, and dogs considered dangerous to human or environmental health will be euthanised immediately.

The government estimates that around 4 million stray dogs roam in Turkey. However, since there are not enough places in the shelters — there are currently 322 animal shelters (only 298 out of 1,403 municipalities) with a capacity for 105,000 dogs, according to the bill — it is very luckily that stray animals will be killed.

Municipalities will be given time until 2028 to build new shelters and improve current facilities, spending at least 0.3% of their annual budget on animal rehabilitation services and building shelters – the law says – but we all know that euthanasia and imprisonment are not the solution for handling properly dog and cat population.

“We were deeply saddened to learn about the Turkish Government’s decision to enacting a new law that would result in the “euthanasia” of thousands of stray animals within the country. Turkey will be another nation on the “black list” for implementing inhumane dog population control methods, instead of allocating resources towards ethical alternatives that are proven to benefit both animals and communities in the long run. In 2024, we possess enough means to address the problem of stray animal overpopulation without harming or killing any creatures. It’s time to change, it’s time to respect animals and respect citizens who want them to be protected!”

OIPA condemns the decision of the Turkish Parliament to pass this terrific law despite the massive international pressure to put a halt to.

In addition to the letter that OIPA sent to the Turkish Government, the protest email that we asked people to sign on the form below, the protest in Ankara that we took part in last June, we also co-signed with over 100 NGOs a letter that the Animal Save Movement submitted to the Turkish Parliament.

Following this news, the President of our member association in Ankara Bir Pati De Sen Tut declares: “We have more than 100 dogs and 50 cats in our feeding spots. Now, we are looking for options about what we can do to save them. I don’t have strength. We have a small private shelter, which is at its full capacity because we are overwhelmed of unadopted animals! We will now try to understand how many new sectors we can build, but we do not have enough resources. I am so sad, disappointed, angry. Everything is meaningless now. What about the animals we cannot reach and help? This is horrific!”

Animals in Turkey need help urgently.
Associations and animal rescuers are looking for international support to:

> Rehome street animals or animals in shelters
> Collect donations to secure animals in boarding facilities
> Find Foster families abroad  to make overseas adoptions easier
> and any other help would be much appreciated.

“Please, don’t leave our strays alone!”

27, January 2025 – OIPA sent a letter to the Constitutional Court of Türkiye urging the Court to intervene for the annulment of Law No. 5199 on the Protection of Animals and its Implementation Regulation. Read our letter (Letter to the Constitutional Court of Türkiye_OIPA_27 Janaury 2025)

Turkey's proposed law threatens the lives of millions of stray animals

MASS KILLING HAS STARTED

Given the well-known poor condition of current shelters in Turkey, this law would lead to mass slaughters.  Niğde and Altındağ municipalities have already begun mass slaughter, as revealed by footage from these regions. A large mass grave has been found in the shelter grounds belonging to the Niğde Municipality, one of the municipalities claiming to be implementing the law introduced under the pretext of “aggressive dogs,” or that the dogs have died of “natural causes, car accidents, or illnesses.” The dead body of a three-legged dog, who had just given birth and was cared for and loved by volunteers in the area, was among the bodies in the shelter owned by Niğde province. As the dogs were covered in blood, veterinarians believe that they did not die of natural causes or were killed through “euthanasia” with a lethal injection as it is claimed, but that they were slaughtered in different ways.

Right after Niğde, another mass grave was found on the grounds of a shelter belonging to the Altındağ district of Ankara, the capital of Turkey. This mass grave revealed dog corpses buried in rather poor condition or thrown away in bags. Since the bodies of the animals were deformed and covered in blood, clearly these dogs did not die of “natural causes” either. The animal bodies are recovered from the ground and taken by the authorities for examination. Ankara Bar Association Animal Rights Centre lawyers, who have been following the case, stated that veterinarians have reached a preliminary conclusion that the animals were killed with a poisonous substance. In light of the knowledge and experience gained from previous mass killings in Turkey, it is believed that these poisonous substances were chemicals such as bleach or insecticides. As a matter of fact, the municipalities are trying to carry out the killings in the cheapest ways possible.

PREVIOUS FACTS

July, 17 2024 – The draft bill proposed by the AK Party regarding the “euthanasia” of stray animals was discussed in the Turkish Commission. A second discussion has been scheduled on the agenda in the next few days. If the bill passes, it will be finally voted by the Turkish Parliament.

Premise – The Justice and Development Party (AKP) of Turkey has put forth a draft bill that would permit the capture and euthanasia of stray animals across the nation. This distressing development follows the resurgence of the issue of dog over population, prompting President Erdoğan to take urgent action.

The proposed law mandates that municipalities collect strays and confined them to shelters that many time turn to be horrific death centers. Dogs not adopted within 30 days will be euthanized as well as healthy dogs, spayed/neutered dogs, non-aggressive dogs, not to talk about sick dogs and  banned breeds .

This proposal is based on the incorrect and unproven idea that spaying and neutering methods are ineffective, justifying in this way a massacre of innocent beings. Instead of investing in sustainable and ethical approaches, municipalities are opting for a cruel and inhumane solution. The proposed law also highlights the failure of many municipalities to meet the requirement to create shelters, as outlined in the revised Animal Rights Law of 2021.

OIPA JOINED TO THE PROTEST IN ANKARA

May, 2 2024 – OIPA joined the protest in Ankara against the Government’s plan to kill stray dogs. Thousands of people joint the protest organized on May, 2 in Istanbul against the unsane decision of the Turkish government to pass a law that will enable municipalities to capture stray dogs and put them down if they are not adopted within 30 days.
People marched yelling “No to the massacre!” bringing protest signs to express their disappointment.
OIPA was there to stand for animals in Turkey and defend their right to life!
The President of our member association Bir Pati De Sen Tut declared: “It was the most crowded protest I have ever seen. Today not only rescuers, volunteers, associations were there to protest, but also citizens, children, and families who were not actively involved in animal rescue activities. Probably, they will not hear us but at least they saw how many we are!”.

Give six abandoned cats a chance

This is a plea for help for 6 innocent souls that lost everything in less than a day. Six cats left alone in Dubai after their owner passed away rescued by volunteers

OIPA International has been contacted by an Italian supporter for an emergency situation in Dubai, where 6 cats had been left alone in one apartment after their owner suddenly passed away in very sad circumstances. The man had no one, familiars or friends neither in Dubai nor in Italy, able to take over these poor animals and to look after them for the rest of their lives.

We therefore had to act fast to transfer the cats from the apartment and to prevent the landlord from dumping them in the middle of the street.
A race against time, trying to find local volunteers promptly available to give their contribution to this emergency rescue mission.

We finally moved cats from the house and we temporary hospitalized them to a veterinary clinic to assest their health conditions and check their vaccination booklets.

They are all well now, just look lost and terribly sad having no idea about why their lives have changed so much!  We have renewed all their vaccinations and provided deworming treatment.

Tsunami – black persian female, 14 years
K2 – white and orange male, 3 years
Meccanocat – black and white male, 7 years
Sonapur – three coloured female, 8 years
Omicron – white and brindle male, 3 years
Bom Bom – brindle male, 6 years

We are now asking everyone’s help to raise funds to cover the costs of their boarding in Dubai and their relocation to Italy, where we will try to find their new forever homes.

We would prefer to not split them, however it might be a necessary decision being hard to find a single home that will welcome them all together.
Left with no solution and no help, we beg everyone to donate even 10 euro towards this desperate case, which is impossible to manage without proper funds.

❤️ HELP US GIVE THEM A NEW CHANCE ❤️

A brief update about the six cats rescued in Dubai after their beloved human friend suddenly passed away

After being rescued and receiving medical care at the veterinary clinic for some days, three of the felines were transferred to a boarding facility, while two others were placed in a temporary foster home.

Tsunami, the eldest of the group, was fortunate enough to be adopted by a caring woman and now resides with a new furry companion – proving that age is no obstacle to finding a loving home. Due to this fortunate and unforeseen adoption, she was spared the ordeal of being placed in boarding or foster care, and will not have to endure the added strain of being relocated overseas.

Meccanocat (black and white) and K2 (red and white) were successfully treated for an eye and dental infection. They recovered well and they are now ready to fly abroad with their three friends.

We urgently need to book their flights, however without your financial assistance, these abandoned cats may miss out on a chance for a better life, as the initial plan to relocate them to Italy has been overridden by the promising adoption opportunities recently arose in the UK.

Help us guarantee them a good future, supporting us with pending boarding, fostering, flights costs and vet bills

Hello dear animal lovers,

your invaluable support is crucial for the success of our daily rescue activities! As in the case of the six cats confined inside an apartment in Dubai after their beloved human companion passed away unexpectedly. An Italian man, who had been living alone surrounded solely by the affection of his four-legged friends.

Thanks to a dedicated team of volunteers, we were able to intervene and rescue the cats. After being hospitalized for some days for check-up and vaccinations, they were transferred to a boarding facility while we were seeking the most suitable solution for them to begin a new life.

The eldest, a 14-year-old female named Tsunami, was fortunately adopted by a kind woman in Dubai, however, two of the cats had to be moved again to a veterinary clinic for some weeks. K2, the red and white cat, was treated for a respiratory infection, while Meccanocat, the black and white cat, was hospitalized for a kidney disease.

After more than a month of boarding, three of the cats could finally fly to the UK for adoption. Despite we booked and paid also for Meccanocat, he couldn’t leave due to his poor health condition.

We are currently awaiting the opportunity to provide a new beginning for the remaining two. However, before we can schedule their flights, we must cover the outstanding expenses, which include the boarding facility and the veterinary clinics for K2 and Meccanocat.

The initial veterinary bills following the rescue, as well as the flights and documents for the departed cats have been paid with your precious support to our fundraiser. However, we are still seeking your help in covering the missing amount (around 6000 AED).

A remote place where humans and animals struggle to find food, water and medical care. In this forgotten land, there are luckily some sensitive individuals who look after and take care of homeless animals with love and immense compassion.

Our intent is to continue providing aid to these invisible dogs and cats and their guardians, for this reason we count on your support.

What the Trump Presidency could mean for billions of animals.

With the US presidential elections, held on the 8th November 2016, we are witnesses of the end of an era.

Excluding politics and diplomacy, it is the first time that the most influent State of the world is going to be led by a person that does not care at all about many fundamental issues, such as: global warming, the ozone hole, climate changing… I mean, I’m not asking for anything impossible: at least a candidate that pretends to be interested in those world problems! And not one who denies them, accusing other countries to think up conspiracy, in order “to make the American industries less competitive”.
Furthermore, it is a bit appalling that the US President decides to go against scientific evidences eltrump-environmentaborated with the scientific consensus: it is ok to doubt about something that is not yet totally discovered (or still discussed), but climate changing is not in question! Neither is it the fact that climate changing poses one of the major threat of our century. However, during all his campaign, Trump has expressed interest in rescinding the former administration’s Climate Action Plan, and in removing the US from the Paris Agreement, in order to give a new life to the American economy.

Moreover, Trump accused the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service of an improper use of the regulation about the protection of endangered species, which restrict the possible exploitation of oil and natural gases. Without counting several species, symbol of the American fauna, such as the grey wolf or the grouse, which, according the new President, are not endangered and so their protection is a total waste of public money…

But it is not over: in May 2016 (and so, during the electoral campaign), the new President claimed that California’s water crisis was due to a decision of diverting water, implemented with the aim of saving a fish nearing extinction (the delta smelt). This accuse was later declared completely false.

trump-animal-rightsNot speaking about what he thinks of animal rights. Or “stuff” as he has called the question. Of course, millions of people that try to create a better world, for the future generations, for animals, for everyone… stuff. Indeed, he chose Forrest Lucas as one of the agriculture advisers: amid his stances, the defence of the exploitation of animals in circuses (http://www.oipainternational.org/circus/) and the rejection of the legislation related to animal welfare in farms. In particular, Lucas has fought against laws that demanded a bigger space for egg-laying hens. Probably, he must think that the space of the sheet of a notebook could be sufficient for a living being. (see more: http://www.oipainternational.org/eggs-and-hens/)

What is done is done. It is currently not possible to change it. We just have to fight harder, to fight with more commitment, to fight angrier… and hoping that his staff do not let him make a mess with our “stuff“.

Make America great again. To the detriment of the rest of creation.

Many youngsters dabble in devilish behavior this time of year, and animals are often the targets of their pranks. But a treat for the kids can be a cruel trick for a dog or cat. Here are some tips to help keep your animals safe on this haunting holiday:

TIPS

  • Keep cats inside. For cats—especially black cats, who have been unfairly associated with “evil forces”—the days leading up to Halloween can be dark indeed as pranksters often go on the prowl for roaming kitties.
  • Keep dogs inside. Some kids think that letting dogs out of their yards on Halloween is a great trick, but it’s a terrifying experience for dogs, who often run from the noise and the strangely dressed people and can become lost.
  • Don’t take dogs on trick-or-treating trips. Dogs can easily become frightened by the endless stream of laughing and screaming children and run off or even bite someone.
  • Keep candy out of reach of animals. All candy (and wrappers!) can cause animals to become sick, and chocolate—which contains an ingredient that is poisonous to dogs—can kill.
  • Keep curious noses and paws away from candles and party favors. Jack-o’-lanterns lit up by candles are appropriately spooky, but they can burn animals (and ch440x320-clip-642813-kitten-and-pumpkins-maxiildren) or start fires if tipped over. The ink that is used in some brightly colored decorations, such as orange streamers and paper pumpkins, is toxic to animals, and swallowed balloons or party favors can block an animal’s digestive tract.

By taking a few simple precautions, everyone—humans and animals alike—can have a safe and happy Halloween.
