The mountain cloud forest in  Kedjom- Keku northwestern Cameroon is under a lot of pressure from local farmers, hunters and shepherds due to its fertile soil and good living conditions, which makes it one of the most rapidly disappearing biotopes in the world.

It is necessary to prevent further deforestation as it is an important (the only) source of drinking water in the area, as well as the home to hundreds of endemic species, including the most endangered chimpanzee subspecies, pan troglodytes ellioti.

OIPA International in collaboration with the Kedjom -Keku CASUD are cooperating to safeguard the Kedjom-Keku Forest and his animals.

The forest is a biotope that our planet can simply not do without. In 2017, the project aims to reforest over 50 hectares of forest. The Misty Mountain Forest in Cameroon is not only home to dozens of endangered organisms including the rarest subspecies of chimpanzee, Pan troglodytes ellioti, it is also the only and most important source of water for the vast region of Bamenda Highlands.

Every tree counts!

CONSERVATION EDUCATION

4-1600x1200

Why?

One of the largest conservation problems of developing countries is the lack of good education. Only about 5% of the inhabitants of rural communities know about conservation. The rapid population growth in Africa doesn’t help either. The load capacity of the African soil is much lower than ours and nature will have troubles dealing with it in the future.

How?

It will be the locals who will have to deal with the problem. The only solution is education, as it broadens people’s horizons, enables them to search for information, realize the implications of their actions on the environment and allows them to develop their own ideas. This is why we started the community conservation education program for children of preschool to primary school ages. Amongst other subjects, we teach them about our activities related to saving the forest and the environment they live in. We plant trees with them and talk about the irreplaceability of the cloud forest.

What we accomplished!

Among other subject, our volunteer teach this pupils on the importance   of conserving   nature and in importance to bother human and animals. Everybody is incredibly interested in their Ecology lessons, in which we use case studies to explain the irreplaceability of the indigenous forests.

LAST CHIMPS

07-days-gorillachimps-wildlife-tracking-1600x1200

Why?

Pan troglodytes ellioti is a chimpanzee subspecies and one of the most endangered primates in the world – it is estimated that the entire population consists of 3500 to 9000 individuals. These chimps can be found solely in Cameroon and Nigeria. The final group of approximately 10 individuals also lives in the Kedjom-Keku area, in the Bamenda Highlands in the North West of Cameroon.

The next closest ellioti chimps live 25 km further in the Kom Wum foothills of Bamenda. We are trying to establish a chimpanzee reservation in Kedjom-Keku in an attempt to save them. In order for Bamenda’s chimpanzees to survive, it is necessary to merge both populations.

Establishing a reservation will lead to the protection of other endemic species and an important water source.

How?

Our program runs in cooperation with community   groups and the Cameroonian Ministry of Forestry and Wildlife.

We are working on creating a detailed map of the entire area, which will serve as the basis for creating the reservation. We are also developing both short and long-term plans, which will lead to the reservation being established and the mountain cloud forest being protected effectively.

As part of our program we also support education, offer alternative long-term sustainable sources of income and teach locals about the effective use of natural resources.

2-1600x1200

What we accomplished!

In late 2014 we managed to “catch” a large chimpanzee male and a healthy female. Despite the fact that for the past 14 years the existence of these chimpanzees was only speculated. We have therefore contacted the Ministry of Forestry and Wildlife, who allowed us to go through with our plans for establishing a chimpanzee reserv in Kedjom-Keku.

WHAT YOU CAN DO: Plant a tree with a Dollar with OIPA International.

WHY?

Both animals and humans can’t live without water. Neither can the people of Kedjom-Keku.

Meanwhile, they are destroying their only source of it – the Misty Mountain Forest. Today there is just under 2% left of it. Which is why in the past decade the climatic conditions in the area have dramatically changed and water level in rivers has dropped.

HOW?

In order to put a stop to this undesired change, we plant trees to reforest old farms and pastures. We believe that with new forest the water will soon return to the mountains in full strength.

In 2017 we plan on reforesting up to 50 hectares of deforested land in the hilly region of Abongphen –this means 50.000 new trees. We want to focus particularly on areas around the river sources and forest corridors that connect the last fragments of the indigenous forest, to not only renew the local source of water, but to also give endangered forest inhabitants a better place to live.

For every 1euro or $ we earn, we plant one tree, which we then take care of for about five years.

Donate 1 euro or $ and save the planet with OIPA international.

OUR ACHIEVEMENTS!

Finding a seed, allowing it to germinate, taking care of it for a year or two, finding the right place for planting it and ensuring its long future is not easy. Even so we have managed to successfully plant a thousand trees that continue to thrive.

“Young generation in Africa are the future and they carry the responsibility of protecting the environment”, said Mr. Gilbert, OIPA Representative.

In most African countries and Cameroon in particular, hunting and animal mistreatment occur every thirty minutes which is a call for concern. The Government of Cameroon has been doing all it can to protect the wild, but their messages are limited within cities and urban areas. Meanwhile hunting and animals mistreatment happen in rural and remote areas.

Farmed and domestic animals suffer every day because their owners have little or no knowledge about animals welfare and protection. Furthermore, there is no law to protect the rights of domestic/farmed animals. Thousands of wild animals like elephants, chimpanzees, antelopes are being killed and smuggled every day. This has put many wild animals at the verge of extinction and environment in great danger.
It is necessary to get Cameroonian involved in animals protection. For this to be effective, we must educate people in remote area and communities because they are the main contributors to animal abuse. People living in rural areas do not have access to any media organ nor know anything about protection and animal welfare.
Since 2012 OIPA is working to sensitize Cameroonians in remote areas on the need to protect and ensure the welfare of animals and their habitat in Cameroon. Many schools and communities have benefited from the initiative.

This Christmas purchase an handcraft piece and support OIPA Cameroon educational projects!

Unfortunately, but realistically, animal cruelty still happens almost every day in Cameroon. Once again we must sadly inform about cases of farm animals mistreatment. Recently in Cameroon some of our OIPA volunteers, during a survey trip in the Far North Region, came across a handful of cases of animals’ ill-treatment, perpetrated in particularly cruel way. Not surprisingly, we could actually see with our own eyes how often the animals here are subjected to much suffering and pain in the name of utilization for life sustaining activities.

The animals are mostly used for ploughing of agricultural fields or for carrying of heavy cargo in the day-to-day activities of humans, as you can see in the pictures.

From investigation of OIPA Cameroon, these animals could work up to 10 hours a day, mostly forced to do so by their owners beyond their natural abilities. Worst of all, their owners do not give them enough fodder, water and rest to make up for the amount of energy lost during the work.

As you know, nowadays ploughing of fields (especially vast fields) for agriculture is mostly done by machines because it’s a very difficult task that requires both force and efficiency. The animals used for these kind of jobs are then subjected to excessive physical strain, just because they need to replace the machinery.

One of the most famous animal rights philosophers of Australian origin, Peter Singer said: “The time has come after the liberation of slaves in the name of anti racism, to liberate animals in the name of antispecism”. This is to say that animals in Cameroon are treated exactly like slaves because they are tied with ropes, beaten with sticks and forced to work much more than they can.

As if the ploughing of fields for agriculture is not enough, animals in this part of the country are also subjected to other difficult tasks such as transportation of goods. Here almost every form of transportation of goods is commonly done by cattle and donkeys. No matter the weight of the goods, the owners of the animals comfortably use theme to transport their goods from fields to markets. Sometimes, the animals trek about 20 kilometers to reach such destinations, with very little fodder, water and rest. The animals carry very heavy loads, such as bags of rice, corn, millet, sorghum or groundnuts, and even clay pots or other artisanal items over long distances.

It should be noted that this area of Cameroon is located in the Sahel region, which is characterized by extreme arid and hot climate: so you can imagine what the animals here go through especially in terms of food, water and temperature regulation.

Doubtless, something has to be done to protect the rights of these animals.

Support OIPA to educate animal owners in the far North of Cameroon and give these animal a better life.

As our campaign continues, we thank you for your wonderful support and for being part of the  initiative. We provided treatments and vaccinations for hundreds of dogs and cats in the rural communities of Cameroon for the first time.

The dog in the picture and her puppy need expensive treatments, therefore we ask for your help.

We are in need of:

  • Drugs
  • Medical equipments
  • Pet food

We are in need as well of means of transport (like used cars or motocycles) to reach rural areas.

Thanks to the Humane Society International, Worldwide Veterinary Service (WVS) and Animals Welfare Institute (AWI), they all help supporting the project.

If you can’t make a donation but you want to give your contribute, you can volunteer with OIPA Cameroon in various ways.

For the past fifteen days, OIPA Cameroon has been treating stray animals in the Bafut  village in the North West region of Cameroon. During this period, over 200 dogs and cats have benefited from this initiative, however Wednesday, 29th June 2016, has been a very sad day as we discovered a black market of dog meat. This trade has been going on for many years since none stood up to fight against it, to protect these animals, nor educate the community on the impact of dog meat on human health and on the animals.

This shocking picture shows exactly how the animals are prepared for consumption.  Anyhow, four dogs were recused from the hands of the perpetrators of this horrible crime by OIPA team. Taking any picture was prohibited until a hidden camera caught   an image. The restaurant owners refused to take photos, nor talk to OIPA. A consumer  has asserted that, over 10 dog are killed every week and dog meat is popularly known as “johnny four foot”.

While our team is hoping to launch a campaign against dog meat, we are also seeking  international support so that the Government of Cameroon put a ban the dog meat in  our country.

The majority of the dogs killed for this inhuman trade, are stray dogs: animals with no previous medical check up which can confirm their health wellbeing, and so exposing human health to different, but equally dangerous, risks.
