OIPA Switzerland – StrayCoCo Foundation is trying to safeguard the dogs of Kosovo, performing CNR Campaigns and Education Projects for the citizen.

Awareness campaigns among the local populations are essential in order to reduce the stray dog population and guarantee animal and human health. If people is informed about animal welfare and behaviour and how to deal with straydogs, it is likely thet episodes of massive poisoning and dog killings won’t happen anymore.

STRAY COCO HAS FOUR TASKS OF EDUCATION AND TRAINING:

  1. Education of children
  2. Formation of young or untrained veterinarians
  3. Formation of shelter workers
  4. Education through information

INFORMATION DAYS FOR CHILDREN

image-2This year StrayCoCo took another important step: Educating children at the primary school in Gjakova. Their veterinarians visited every hour another class, with two puppies, and introduced the flyer from Anna Fleischhauer to teach children to understand dogs and the stray dog problem. Some children have for the first time in their life a puppy in their hands. All of them study seriously the flyer and ask many questions about dog behavior.

CNVR – STRAYCOCO MOST IMPORTANT PROGRAM

Continuos training of interested veterinarians in 2016

imageAgain StrayCoCo veterinarians offer to students in their last year or veterinarians that are specialized on large animals, how to spay and neuter dogs with a small cut. This year  DVM Dardan Pozhegu from Pristina spent one day at Pro Vet Klinika in Nagavc.

Last year the dutch volunteer vet Birgit Brants trained DVM Henrik Nulleshi, DVM Ernest Nulleshi and DVM Adrian Mulla from the veterinary station in Peja, so that they can any time take over this work for their municipality.

It is wonderful to have their support.

Please Donate, so that we can continue NON STOP with our program in West Kosovo.

EDUCATION THROUGH INFORMATION

StrayCoCo try to profit from the circumstance, that most Kosovarians use Facebook. Their program is to post regularly during the year comics about stray dogs to make everyone understand, where they come from. StrayCoCo volunteer cartoonist EL ZONKO from DE-Halle a.S. is creating new cartoons every few months. If you have any idea, which topic should be posted, just write us: info@straycoco.com

ANIMAL CARE TRAINING

image-3Let us not forget to mention the training of StrayCoCo workers in animal care. Most of the time DVM Blendi Bejdoni and DVM Eriola Palla instruct StrayCoCo workers. Then Meg Ardner, retired US Army Officer, works with the dogs at the Sanctuary and shows the workers how to care for them. Finally Athina Löhrer and Jasmin Rosenberger, two 2nd year apprentices in the Swiss shelter Strubeli/Hegnau spent one week End of May 2016 in Nagavc Sanctuary and Pro Vet clinic, where they showed all clinic-employees and shelter workers how to clean a shelter and how to care for dogs.

There are five days in the Hindu festival of lights called Diwali, or Tihar, as it is known by Nepalese locals.  Each day celebrates a different animal, and October 29th, the second day of the festival, honors dogs.  They are decorated and given a feast fit for royalty – even streetdogs!

Diwali is celebrated with bonfires, candles, fairy lights, diyas (traditional earthen lamps), and rangolis (traditional floor art).  Friends and families gather together, sharing their joy, food, and gifts with one another.

11-10-15-kukur-tihar-festival-in-nepal1The first day, Kaag Tihar (Kwah Pujā), is dedicated to corvids – crows and ravens. Their cawing represents grief and sadness.  Sweets are left on rooftops for them to fend off this despair.  On the third day, Gai Tihar, cows are venerated with garlands and the best grass, because they signify wealth and prosperity.  Houses are cleaned and adorned with marigolds and chrysanthemums.  There are other celebrations on the fourth and fifth days for oxen and for sisters to thank their brothers for the protection they provide.

tihar-2But the second day, Kukur Tihar (Khichā Pujā) is set aside for dogs, who are believed to be messengers of the Lord Yamaraj, the god of death. Yamaraj is said to have two dogs – Shyam and Sadal – who guard the entrance to hell. There is a very special relationship between people and dogs, as they were one of the first domesticated animals, so they are decorated with garlands and tika (marks on the forehead), which makes each of them sacred and empowers them to bless all those they encounter on this day.  They are treated to heaps of scrumptious food.  Pets and street dogs alike are blessed and pampered throughout the day.

OIPA Nepal – NAWRC will celebrate this day dedicated to our precious fourpawed friends. OIPA delegation is very active in Kavrepalanchok District of Nepal and performs constantly CNR Campaigns and give assistance to animals and dogs in need, their activity is essential in a poor country as Nepal.

During this important Hindu festival OIPA Volunteers will collect donations and support for their activities.

Sava’s Safe Haven is an OIPA Member League. They have a refuge for Animal Welfare based in Galati, Romania run by Sava’s family. In that moment Sava’s Safe Haven has in care over 250 animals as dogs and cats.

Their mission is to protect and promote Animal Rights and Welfare through rescue-care and rehoming. They treat and care sick and injured animals.

Among other projects in benefit of animals, one of the largest projects is the construction and equipping of a veterinary clinic.

Besides 100% functional clinic, they have room for recovery and room for newcomers dogs. The clinic was authorized by the local authorities.

As a modest clinic, can be performed only simple surgeries as spay/neuter and others, but such of surgeries are paramount in a country where everyday dozens of unwanted animals live in the streets. Also this shelter allows people to bring their sick animals to get medical help for free, knowing that without this help many community animals will die because their owners will never bring their pets to vets due to lack of funds.

Sava’s safe haven can continue his work and offer free medical services to the community animals only with the support of generous people. Donations are always very helpful as well in the form of medical equippment/treatments.
