GREAT VICTORY FOR OIPA SWITZERLAND – STRAY COCO The Veterinary Chamber of Kosovo published a press release on 7th of December 2016 concerning stray dogs. They point out, that catch/neuter/vaccinate/release is the best method to regulate and control the stray dog population. They declare that they are committed to veterinary ethics and remind all citizens that dogs used to be members of families and that dog owners are responsible for the well-being of their dogs. Killing of dogs is not allowed and should end.

After weeks of diplomatic work and petitions we finally reach the first step of this project. The dog won’t be killed, and CNVR campaign will start soon! Now we are looking for supporters!

THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR SUPPORT!

AVUK, Food and Veterinary Agency Kosovo, has prepared a regulation for animal shelters that orders euthanasia for dogs without owners (abandoned animals and stray dogs) within 30 days after being brought into a shelter, if there will not be a new adopter. Article 9 /6 says the minimum period for adoption of sterilized animals is 30 days after their stay in the shelter. After this period the shelter may euthanise the dog – regulation Article 10 /1.3. When animals have passed the minimum time period required for adoption the rules of Euthanasia can be applied.

In the whole regulation the option of release as requires the CNVR Program is missing! It will be no longer possible to release stray dogs to their territory.

This Regulation will enter into force seven days after signature by the Prime Minister!

AVUK is the responsible Administration for Animal “Welfare” in Kosovo.

KOSOVO ANIMAL WELFARE FRAMEWORK

c5We are convinced that along with a continuous CNVR program education of children at all ages must take place to create change in behaviour of citizens. We agree also, that without a law regulation concerning responsible dog owner ship this country cannot control the stray dog population. CNVR alone brings forth change, because it stops reproduction and treated dogs stay longer healthy. But if the government would support CNVR and additionally would start education programs for children and information campaigns for citizens, registration of each owned dog – this country would go the correct way considering animal welfare! Kosovo is 4 times smaller than Switzerland, it has 1,9 Mio Citizens, and a very big expat community that is used to live in countries with correct animal rights and animal protection and No stray dogs! Kosovo can attract tourists and economic investments if they can deal with garbage and in a humane way with stray dogs.

Many European tourist will not visit Kosovo knowing about death camps, which the shelters will be euthanising dogs after 30 days!

CNR Campaign – THE MOST EFFECTIVE STRATEGY FOR STRAY DOG CONTROL

cane3Widespread adoption of CNVR (Capture, Neuter, Vaccinate and Return/Release) programs for dogs, along with changes in human behaviour and environment, offers a sustainable remedy for both disease and animal welfare problems posed by free-roaming dogs in developing countries.

CNVR programs directly confront the problem of high turnover of dog populations, which mitigates against extensive rabies vaccination coverage and dog population control. CNVR programs have as their goal the reduction—not elimination— of street dog populations and the control of rabies and other diseases transmission.

Many countries choose to adopt, as solution for the straydogs issue, massive killing campaigns, by shooting or poisoning or euthanising the dogs. This strategy, unfortunately, is not useful:

  1. Massive killings of dogs is a really expensive operation, in fact the Government has to pay for weapons’ munitions, narcotics, veterinarians and officers to perform the operation, collection  and discharge of dead animals, whereas CNVR Campaigns are much less expensive and long lasting. Furthermore they are often performed by Animal Welfare Associations with the support of many volunteers.
  1. Massive killing of dogs is not a long lasting solution, in fact, it’s not possible to kill ALL the dogs in the country, therefore there will be new puppies, new straydogs and in a couple of months the situation will be exactly the same as before and the straydog issue won’t be solved. Whereas with the CNR approach, the straydog population will stop growing and will be controlled along the years.
  1. Massive killings/euthanasia of dogs is a very cruel practice, shows no respect for animals, for the environment, for the living beings and the creatures of the Earth. Which message will pass to the children and future generations if instead of showing compassion and empathy to all human and animals, we show violence and no regrets for such a brutal action? If there is a better solution and the possibility to save innocent lives, why choose to kill them and to use the violence?

RESPECT FOR INNOCENT ANIMALS IS A SIGN OF CIVILIZATION, WHICH ACCORDS WITH MODERN SOCIETIES AND IT IS A BROAD MESSAGE OF PEACE.

OIPA supports in many countries CNVR Campaigns, for example in Nepal, Cameroon, India, Tanzania, CLICK HERE

OIPA and STRAYCOCO support CNVR Campaigns and are asking with this appeal to the Prime Minister of KOSOVO, ISA MUSTAFA, to not sign the AVUK Regulation mentioned above.

cane1

KOSOVO – STOP PRIME MINISTER ISA MUSTAFA FROM SIGNING THE REGULATION FOR ANIMAL SHELTERS!

To the Attention of the Prime Minister Mr. Isa Mustafa

To the attention of the Prime Minister of Kosovo, Mr. Isa Mustafa

I am writing hereby, in regards of the AVUK Regulation XX/2015 about Animal Shelters, asking to the Prime Minister to don’t sign the Regulation, and to give a real possibility to the dogs to find adoption and to don’t be killed with Euthanasia. In the whole regulation the option of release as requires the CNVR Program is not mentioned. It will be no longer possible to release stray dogs in the territory. Personally, I will not visit Kosovo, and I will ask all my acquaintances to do the same, until this situation will be solved legally.

OIPA TANZANIA, Meru Animal Welfare Organization in June conducted a 3-day training for the organization Community Animal Health Workers in three villages in the Manyara Region.

14184506_1070629346362444_7502597465780614726_nSpay and Neuter Clinic

MAWO spay and neuter campaign continued in July, as they conducted a week of veterinary services in Terat village. Theyr primary goal is help reduce the number of puppies born, and thus the spread of disease. They believe that if they can contribute to spaying female dogs and reduce the number of pups born each year, this will gradually lower the number of suffering street and feral dogs, which are directly linked to disease and infestations into rural communities (See our article about stray dogs in developing countries, CLICK HERE).

14370218_1084156688343043_1607586807231101596_nDonkey Mobile Clinic

From July to September of this year, MAWO provided treatment to 978 donkeys through their mobile clinics. The goal of MAWO’s mobile clinics is to promote the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of donkeys diseases, disorders and injuries. Though donkeys are very sturdy and strong animals, they are susceptible to various diseases and health problems. MAWO provides advice and services related to vaccination routine treatments (such as deworming), wound treatment, hoof trimming, eye care, and cure for illnesses. At the mobile Clinics, MAWO also provides drugs and advice where they can be obtained for future needs.

Harness Training

MAWO hosted successful donkey harnessing trainings in the villages of Terat, Komolo and Losinay. As a result, 90 Maasai women were able to create their own cruelty-free harness by using local materials which are commonly available in their areas. Participants were also trained on making saddle packs to protect the spine of the donkey. Poorly- made and badly-fitting harnesses not only cause wounds, but also affect a donkey’s behavior, body condition, lameness, and certain diseases such as tetanus. MAWO continues to assess animal welfare through the use of the Donkey Welfare Guide.

13962614_1061445717280807_8923455078510969539_nRadio Program

MAWO continues to use radio outreach in an effort to positively change attitudes of users and owners of donkeys. Through these informative broadcasts, they strive to improve the knowledge af animal-owners in order to facilitate and encourage good animal-welfare practices and equipment use, thereby reducing the incidence of donkey injuries. MAWO also educates the public on sheltering their donkeys to avoid their being stolen or developing malicious skin disease that are common in the communities. Radio has allowed MAWO to reach a high percentage of residents and they aim to continue using these means, along with web and social media, to educate the public.

A shepherd tied his dog with a rope to his car and dragged him for over a kilometer to “teach him a lesson”, as he preferred to play with other dogs in the field instead of listening to his calls. This is what happened near Amatrice, one of the sites of the recent earthquake in Italy.

The Police Officers and the Civil Protection and local police of Milan, noticed the terrible scene and the trace of blood left on the ground and chased the man by car. The man attempted to escape, even accellerating, but the police forced him to stop.

The OIPA volunteers, already in the area for other controls, called by the authorities, immediately contacted a veterinarian who visited the animal. The young shepherd dog was clearly scared, with damaged and bleeding paws, and with high body temperature. He was struggling to breathe and it was necessary to heat him with a thermal blanket.

The man, a well-known shepherd in the area, doesn’t shown regret for the torture, reporting that he had already done much worse to other animals in his farm. For this reason, in addition to the criminal complaint for animal abuse, he will be subjected to further checks by the Police. The dog was legal custody awarded to the OIPA person in charge, Enrico Piacenza, and he was temporarily transferred to the health kennel of Rieti. In the coming days he will be moved to a private hosting.

“We’re already facing dramatic moments in this region, and it’s terrible to see such cruel acts of violence against a helpless animal – commented Enrico Piacenza, OIPA Piemonte Eco-Zoophilous Guards coordinator and legal guardian of the dog. We thanks the police and the Civil Protection that, despite the earthquake emergencies, rushed and cooperated in order to punish the responsible”.

Violence against animals, that unfortunately still occur nowadays, is particularly regrettable in areas already affected by a tragedy, as the earthquake that struck the central regions of Italy and that has destroyed dozens of human and animal lives.

Ozzy was a stray cat, he was living in the streets with his mother and brothers. When OIPA volunteers find him, they noticed that he was the only one who couldn’t walk and he was weak and skinny.

The volunteers brought him to the vet: Ozzy had a congenital deformity on the back paws. He couldn’t walk due to this deformity and he had many wounds on the back side of the body due to the dragging movement.

The Vet said that Ozzy will never be able to jump and run, but with a surgery he may walk again. The treatments were complicated and lasted for months, but recently he had the first surgery and he’s recovering. Now he has to do specific exercises to strenghten the muscles. In the next months he will have the second surgery to the other paws.

The volunteers keep him busy, since he can not move much. Thanks to their commitment he may have a whole new life.

If you want to help Ozzy to start walking and recover well you can make a donation.

Summer has gone. Maybe too quickly but now, with this sunny/windy/rainy weather, it is just a memory for other… two hundred seventy days? More or less, yes. However, do not give up hope: these days will not be all the same! Life is not just divided up in two times (summer holidays and the rest of the year), but it is full of colour, full of novelties, full of… life. Among a week or so, we will definitely be in autumn. But what exactly autumn brings us?

Autumn has quite always been considered as the season of the end: the end of long and sunny days, the end of the good and carefree period, the end of the “life” of the nature, which prepares itself for lethargy and winter… but that is not so true: something comes to life in autumn, something grows when all the rest dies.

MUSHROOMS. This delicious gift of the nature presents itself only in this period of the year. When the first rains appear, they spring up like… mushrooms! Since the end of August (if it is a particularly rainy August!) and for the following months, it is possible to enjoy a wonderful day-trip or, for the most passionate, an entire weekend searching for these incredible food. HERE SOME SAVING-LIFE ADVICE FOR THE BEGINNERS:

1)      Mushrooms are definitely not all the same. It is crucial to emphasize it because even if some have an awesome taste… other can poison you! So pay attention to what you look for. And pay double attention to what you eat. Remember: there are mushrooms that can be eaten only one time in life. Therefore, if you are not sure about what you picked, you can bring it to someone who is more expert than you are. Just to make an example, mushrooms in which smurfs lives… are not edible. ABSOLUTELY NOT.

porcini-mushrooms

2)      The right outfit. I am not joking: you are not going to walk on the most fashion catwalk of Paris or New York, anyway for every occasion there is the right clothing: the most suitable one is composed by classic mountain outfit, with high boots and the body covered as much as possible. The ideal equipment consists of a pair of comfortable and sturdy walking shoes, which allow you to venture into places such as steep slopes, ravines and streams. Waterproof boots and long pants also guard against any viper or insects’ bites.

 3)      Necessary accessories: same as above, not to parade in front of the Queen, but just to be ready in case of emergency, it is fundamental to have a first aid kit with patches, disinfectants, sterile gauze and elastic bandages.

non-edible-mushroom-smurfs

Moreover:

–            a wicker basket or something to carry the picked mushroom that must allow the spores to spread into the forest and therefore develop other mushrooms;

–            a cutter, that will serve to clean the mushrooms and let spores and hyphae* remain on site, and so keeping the woodland habitat (there are specific cutters formed of two parts: the blade and a useful brush to gently remove the earth from the hat);

–            a stick, not mandatory, can be used to remove branches or dry leaves that may hide the presence of mushrooms.

HOW TO LOOK FOR AND PICK UP MUSHROOM:

Firstly, mode of collection may vary according the kind of mushroom and soil. Furthermore, it is good practice not to collect all the specimens, in order to let some to grow and produce spores for further generations.Mushrooms should be collected paying attention to the underlying mycelium (the vegetative apparatus, formed from a weave of filaments called hyphae*), acting without haste and using both hands. With one hand twists and slowly rotate the base of the mushroom stem while putting upward traction, and with the other hold the underlying soil.

how-to-pick-mushroomsTo be a real vegan means not just to avoid meat and animal products, but also to be “in real contact” with the nature: while looking for mushrooms (that are completely vegan!) it is important to prevent trampling new little plants (using well-trodden path) avoiding using the stick as a rake and avoiding killing animals or insects or pick flowers.

Veganism is not just about food, not only: it is a choice that refers to all aspects of the life. OIPA supports a vegan lifestyle, the lifestyle that ensure balance and mutual respect between living things. Only this kind of life is able to assure the life cycle of each creature, and to help the right course of life on Earth.

Looking at them you can’t even think they are dogs.

Walking skeletons and visibly sick, three greyhounds Afghans lived locked up in a private home in Camogli near Genoa, in neglected conditions as to bring them close of death.

Thanks to a warning, after two visits with local Police and veterinary ASL, the OIPA Animal Guards have managed to steal the dogs to the ill-treatment they were subjected.

The elderly owner, already looked after by social services, has hindered the operations, tugging the animal guards and pushing them out of the house. In fact, the woman claimed that dogs were not in bad shape.

“This is an other case in which the social disease of a person becomes ill-treatment to animals – explains Giuliana Luppi, coordinator of the OIPA Genoa animal guards team – “Who takes care about people with this kind of problem, such as social services, must consider the suffering of animals, because they are victims unable to escape from unbearable living conditions. So it is necessary to act as a team to rescue both, people and animals. “

The dogs, two males and one female, were subjected to seizure and the woman was sued for animal abuse and for not suitable and cruel detention.

The animals have been transfer to the kennel and visited: the veterinary pointed out the deep state of malnutrition and dehydration of the dogs, as well as suffering from dermatitis and alopecia.

These days are spent fighting against the time to save persons and animals that can be still alive trapped under the ruins. Many people lost everything in this tragedy and their animals are the only family members survived.

Stocking materials and pet food, coordinating the volunteers, performing emergency operations all day long often walking for long distances since the streets are interrupted: those are the daily activitites of OIPA volunteers.

Stories

PESCARA DEL TRONTO (AP) – A woman who lived with two cats, running to save her life lost the animals. Once she was safe in Rome, she asked to the volunteers to check in her house her cats. OIPA volunteers with the firebrigade went to the address indicated and found the property half collapsed, but the animals were still alive. After giving them food and water they brought the cats back to the owner in the same day.

CONFIGNO (RI) – Few cats of about 20 days were founded near to the ruins of a building, they lost their mother in the tragedy. Their destiny is still uncertain, but the volunteers found a nanny cat which will look after them right now on and hopefully they will make it.

VALLECCHIA (AP) – Two families were living in a rural area with 30 cats, since they didn’t want to leave the animals alone they stayed in the house even if the firebrigade recommended to move to the rescue camp. OIPA volunteers are working to bring them food everyday.

Many stories, only one word. The owners’ love for their lost pets, the animals’ love for their human friends, OIPA volunteers love for all the creatures hit by this tragedy.

ARUSHA-based animal welfare organization–Meru Animal Welfare Organization (MAWO) has embarked in awareness campaign to empower Maasai pastoralist communities in Simanjiro District with new skills on how to protect donkeys from theft.

In the campaign, people in the area have formed a community donkey security network—a platform for local communities to exchange notes on the security of the working animals in their localities.

“As MAWO we’ve established Donkey Security Network to connect all community by sharing information if they have any information of people from/out of community need stole their donkey,” said Johnson Lyimo who is the organization’s coordinator.

He said the campaign came after reports that a number of donkeys are being stolen in the district by people who suspected to have been taking the animals to Dodoma Region.

It is estimated that since January more than 2500 donkey have been stolen from the district which is mostly being inhabited by Maasai pastoralists.

The MAWO’s campaign is carried out in collaboration with local leaders.

“So we’ve been telling people to start keeping donkeys in shelters as it is to cattle. This will help to reduce theft incidences, which currently are on top gear,” Lyimo said.

He added: “We have been using different platforms including community-based radios such as Radio to cover more area and tell community to keep their donkeys in Boma as most of them stolen in night hours and outside the boma.”

According to him, the organization will also continue educating the community to keep their donkey, which plays an imperative role when it comes to providing cheap transport for rural communities.

“We are working together with Community as they still need this animal for their daily life.”

Recently, Naberera villagers managed to seize 200 donkeys, which were enroute to Dodoma Region.

Parked in a Lorry, the donkeys were being stolen from different bomas of Simanjiro District

Another MAWO official Dr Dauson Katurisa said people in the area have been complaining of the decreasing number of donkeys in their localities due to theft.

“These people here are relying on donkey as their transport means. They use donkeys in transporting luggage, water for domestic use and crops from farms.”

Naberera village chairman, Jacob Korosi said that in the donkey theft incidences, some leaders are involved.

So far, he said that more than 2500 donkeys have been stolen in the district, which leads in northern Tanzania for having large number of donkeys.

Last year, the district had more than 30,000 donkeys.

Other districts include Longido, Mionduli, Ngorongoro and Arusha.
MAWO is a nonprofit animal-welfare organization working in the Northern region of Tanzania, which fights for these five freedoms of animals–Freedom from hunger and thirst, Freedom from discomfort, Freedom from pain, injury and disease, Freedom from fear and distress and Freedom to express normal behavior.

“Punda wetu maisha yetu “ The aim is to protect this animal to continue helping the community especial the women.

September 2016 – SAD NEWS: BALU IS DISAPPEARED!

After months of appeals and campaining, the bear trapped in a cage in the restaurant Kodra e Kuajve in Durres, is disappeared as you can see from the empty cage.

Balu (known as well as Poku) was a 4 years old bear, male. He was sold from a poacher to the owner of the restaurant and now, after months of actions he’s been moved.

It is the sad destiny of many bears in captivity. When the media pressure become to high the bears often disappear.

It’s essential to keep high the international pressure on the restaurant and on the Government, OIPA will keep searching for Balu.

OIPA will keep asking to the owner of the restaurant what is happened to the animal.

BROWN BEARS IN ALBANIA

The bear populations in Albania and in the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia are of significant biological and genetic value, because they form the connecting populations between the brown bear populations in Croatia and Slovenia in the North and the endangered brown bear population of Greece. Data on the numbers and distribution of these populations are therefore of paramount importance for the conservation of the bear population in South-East Europe.

In Albania, the current estimation of the bear population is about 250 individuals; the species has been steadily declining in the last 20 years, and the current population size estimate is the lowest ever. The species is legally protected in Albania, however, there is no management plan or are implementing a national strategy for the conservation of the species, and bear populations in both countries are not being systematically monitored. Consequently, there is a serious lack of information on their general status and distribution, and the population numbers mentioned above are merely educated assumptions.

Many bears are still kept by Albanian citizens in private houses, restaurants and tourist locations.

________________________________________________________________

After months the situation of Balu is not changed. The owner of the restaurant doesn’t recognize that the bear is in danger.

The animal has never been visited by a Vet and he is fed with sweets and other improper food gave by the tourist. His psychic and physics health conditions should be checked and he needs proper food.

Even a little improvement of the cage of the bear would be good for his wellness.

____________________________________________________________________

After the segnalation of a tourist travelling in Albany we discovered that the restaurant Kodra e Kuajve, in Durres (Albany), is using a bear as tourist attraction.

Our volunteers did then a little investigation to find out how was the animal and as you can see in our previous article the bear  shows clear signs of discomfort. Read more here: https://www.oipainternational.org/balu-bear-albania-oipa/

We tried to get in touch with the owner of the restaurant and find a way to dialogue with him in order to improve the conditions of the animal and then move the bear to a sanctuary, but since it was not possible to start a dialogue we decided to take action and start an appeal.

The restaurant is infact registered on trip advisor and there are several pictures showing the bear trapped.

OIPA International CALL TO ACTION: help Balu, the bear abused and trapped in the restaurant.

LEAVE A COMMENT ON TRIP ADVISOR EXPRESSING YOUR DISPLEASURE FOR THIS ANIMAL MISTREATMENT

“Hereby to express my deepest indignation for the mistreatment to which Balu is condemned to live. Bears are wonderful animals, and they need to live freely. Confine them in little cages to be shown to clients is an horrific and irresponsible behaviour, that does not consider the importance of this endangered animals’ lives. Due to the fact that bears in Albania are legally protected species, I hope an investigation will be started, to punish the responsible, if he does not immediately release the bear. Personally, I will not eat in that restaurant, and I will ask all my acquaintances to do the same, until this situation will be solved.”

ACTION CALL: BALU, THE BEAR USED AS TOURIST ATTRACTION IN A RESTAURANT. SEND A LETTER OF PROTEST

To the Attention of the Ministry of Environment, Mr. Koka

Sir/Madam

Hereby to express my deepest indignation for the mistreatment to which the bear in the “Kodra e Kuajve” restaurant in Durres (Albany) is condemned to live. Bears are wonderful wild animals, and they need to live freely. Confine them in little cages to be shown to clients is an horrific and irresponsible behaviour, that does not consider the importance of this endangered animals’ lives, and of their role in the environment balance. Due to the fact that bears in Albania are legally protected species, I'm asking you to start searching for a better place where this animal will be able to spend the rest of its life, and stop breaking the law.

Personally, I will not visit Albania, and I will ask all my acquaintances to do the same, until this situation will be solved.
